Create and Alter Symmetric Keys

A symmetric key is a key that is used for both encryption and decryption.

Note: This topic focuses on information that may be unfamiliar to you. It does not include all step and field descriptions.

To create or alter a symmetric key

  1. Select the Symmetric Keys node under the Security node in the Object Explorer.
  2. Select one of the following:
    • Click to create a symmetric key.
    • Select a symmetric key and click to alter it.
  3. Complete the fields as necessary.

 

Create and Alter Roles

Note: This topic focuses on information that may be unfamiliar to you. It does not include all step and field descriptions.

To create or alter a role

  1. Select the Roles node under the Security node in the Object Explorer.

  2. Select one of the following:
    • Click to create a role.
    • Select a role and click to create a role like the selected one.
    • Select a role and click to alter it.
  3. Complete the fields as necessary. Review the following for additional information:

    Role Type

    Select the type of role for the database. Valid values are:

    • Database role—restricts or grants access to the database based on SQL Server security.

    • Application role—restricts or grants access to data based on the application used to access the database. Application roles do not contain members.

    Owned Schemas

    Select the schemas owned by this role.

    Members of this role

    Displays the database roles or users assigned to this role.

    Note: This list is only available if you select a Database role.

To create or alter a user-defined server role

  1. Select the Server Roles node under the Server Security node in the Object Explorer.

    Note: User-defined server roles are marked with red icon in the Object Explorer.

  2. Select one of the following:

    • Click to create a server role.
    • Select a server role and click to create a server role like the selected one.
    • Select a server role and click to alter it.
  3. Complete the fields as necessary. In the General page specify logins and roles that will possess this server role. In the Memberships page specify server roles where the current server role will be included as a member.
