Set Column Permissions

To set column permissions

In the Column Permissions window, complete the following fields:

Principal

Displays the name of the user on which you want to set column permissions.

Table name

Displays the owner and name of the table on which you want to set column permissions.

Permission name

Displays the type of permission you want to set.

Column permissions

Select whether you want to allow or deny permissions for each column in the table.

To create or alter a schema

  1. Select Schemas node under the Security node in the Object Explorer.

  2. Select one of the following:
    • Click to create a schema.
    • Select a schema and click to alter it.
  3. Complete the fields as necessary.

Tip: To change the object's schema, right-click the object in the Object Explorer and select Change Schema.

Create and Alter Asymmetric Keys

An asymmetric key is one half of a key pair used to encrypt and decrypt a message where neither can be derived from the other.

Tip: You can change how objects display in the Object Explorer. For example, you can create custom categories or move objects out of existing categories (such as Programmability and Security) in Tools | Options | Explorer | Objects. See Object Options for more information. 

To create or alter an asymmetric key

  1. Select the Asymmetric Keys node under the Security node in the Object Explorer.
  2. Select one of the following:
    • Click to create an asymmetric key.
    • Select an asymmetric key and click to alter it.
  3. Complete the fields as necessary. Review the following for additional information:
Create from source

Select one of the following:

  • True—Select to import the asymmetric key pair.
  • False—Select to generate new asymmetric key pair.
Type source

Select one of the following:

  • Assembly, Executable File—Select to import public key from the corresponding object.
  • Strong File Name—Select to provide the path to the file.

 

Create and Alter Certificates

Certificates are used to encrypt data transmissions.

Tip: You can change how objects display in the Object Explorer. For example, you can create custom categories or move objects out of existing categories (such as Programmability and Security) in Tools | Options | Explorer | Objects. See Object Options for more information.

To create or alter a certificate

  1. Select the Certificates node under the Security node in the Object Explorer.
  2. Select one of the following:
    • Click to create a certificate.
    • Select a certificate and click to alter it.
  3. Complete the fields as necessary. Review the following for additional information:
General options Description

Generate new key

Select if you want to provide the subject for certificate.

Use existing file

Select if you want to provide assembly, strong file name or executable file.
Source options Description

Type source

Select the item on which to base the new certificate.

  • Strong Name File—Create the certificate based on an existing certificate file.
  • Executable fileCreate the certificate from an executable file that has been signed by the certificate.
  • AssemblyCreate the certificate from an assembly. Enter the name of the assembly.

    Note: The assembly must be already loaded in the SQL Server database.
