Define Advanced Agent Properties

Use the Advanced page to forward agent events to the application log on another server and to define when the CPU is in an idle state.

Note: This topic focuses on information that may be unfamiliar to you. It does not include all step and field descriptions.

To define advanced agent properties

  1. Select an object under the Agent node in the Object Explorer.

  2. Click .

  3. Select the Advanced page.

  4. Complete the fields as necessary.  Review the following for additional information:

    SQL Server event forwarding

    Description

    Forward events to a different server

    Select this checkbox to forward events to an application log on another server.

    Events

    Select whether to forward unhandled events only, or all events.

    If the event severity is greater than or equal to

    Select a severity level to forward events containing that level or higher to a different server.

    Idle CPU condition

    Description 

    Define idle CPU condition

    Select this checkbox to set the amount of usage and time when the computer is in an idle state.

    Average CPU usage falls below

    Enter the percentage that the CPU should remain below for all CPUs.

    And remains below this level for

    Enter the amount of time, in seconds, that the CPU must remain below the percentage.

Set Up Alert Systems

When you view or edit properties for the SQL Server Agent, use the Alert System page to determine the method used for sending alerts about the agent.

Note: This topic focuses on information that may be unfamiliar to you. It does not include all step and field descriptions.

To set up an agent alert system

  1. Select an object under the Agent node in the Object Explorer.

  2. Click .

  3. Select the Alert System page.
  4. Complete the fields as necessary. Review the following for additional information:

    Mail session

    Description

    Enable mail profile

    Select this checkbox to enable email alerts for the agent.

    Mail profile

    Select or enter the email profile for alerts. Click Test to confirm that the profile is available.

    Address formatting for pager emails

    In the To line and CC line fields, enter the pager address prefix or suffix. The operator's actual pager address is inserted when a notification is sent.

    Include body of email in notification message

    Select this checkbox to include the full alert message in the notification. If this checkbox is cleared, only text in the Subject line displays in the body of the message.

    Fail-safe operator

    Description

    Enable fail-safe operator

    Select this checkbox to enable a fail-safe (backup) operator.

    Operator

    Select an existing operator or define a new operator to designate as the fail-safe operator. See Define Operator Properties for more information.

    Notify using

    Select the method to use for sending notifications to the fail-safe operator.

When you view or edit properties for the SQL Server Agent, use the Job System page to set the job execution time-out and a proxy account for job steps for the SQL Server agent.

To set up job systems

  1. Select an object under the Agent node in the Object Explorer.

  2. Click .

  3. Select the Job System page.
  4. Complete the fields as necessary. Review the following for additional information:

    Job execution

    Description

    Shutdown time-out interval (in seconds)

    Enter the number of seconds to wait before the job times out.

    Master SQL Server Agent (MSX) server

    Displays the name of the master SQL Server Agent if you are running SQL Server instances on multiple remote servers.

    Job step proxy account

    Description 

    Use a non-administrator proxy account

    Select this checkbox to specify a non-system administrator user that can execute SQL Server Agent jobs using a proxy account. If this checkbox is cleared, any SQL Server Agent jobs that a non-system administrator attempts to execute fail.  

    Proxy account settings

    Enter the user name, password, and domain for the non-system administrator user.

Define Agent Connections

When you view or edit properties for the SQL Server Agent, use the Connections page to define an alias for the local host and the authentication used when connecting.

Note: This topic focuses on information that may be unfamiliar to you. It does not include all step and field descriptions.

To define agent connections

  1. Select an object under the Agent node in the Object Explorer.

  2. Click .

  3. Select the Connection page.
  4. Complete the fields as necessary.  Review the following for additional information:

    SQL Server alias

    Specify an alias to use when connecting if you are connecting using:

    • A non-default network transport.

    • An instance that listens using an alternate named pipe.

    Local host name

    Select the name of the local instance to connect using an alias.

    Note: You must specify a local instance or the agent cannot run properly.

    Login time-out

    Enter the amount of time, in seconds, that elapse before the connection attempt times out. The default is 30 seconds.
