Create and Alter Users

Note: This topic focuses on information that may be unfamiliar to you. It does not include all step and field descriptions.

To create or alter a user

  1. Select Users node under the Security node in the Object Explorer.
  2. Select one of the following:
    • Click to create a user.
    • Select a user and click to create a user like the selected one.
    • Select a user and click to alter it.
  3. Complete the fields as necessary.  Review the following for additional information:

    Security type Specify the way of securing the user. It can be associated with login, mapped with certificate or symmetric or asymmetric key, etc.

    Schemas owned by this user

    Select the checkbox beside any schemas you want this user to own.

    Database role membership

    Select the checkbox beside any database role you want to assign to this user.

To edit a user or role permission

  1. In the Database Security Management window, select the Permissions page.

  2. Complete the fields as necessary.  Review the following for additional information:

    List all objects/

    List objects with active permissions

    Select whether you want to view permissions for all objects or only those objects hat currently have permissions assigned to this database.

    Note: You cannot modify permissions for the dbo user.

    Objects

    Select the object for which you want to set permissions.

    Permissions

    Select whether you want to allow or deny permissions for each object type.

    Note: You can revoke all permissions for an object by clicking Revoke.

  3. Set column permissions if needed. See Set Column Permissions for more information
  4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for each object on which you want to modify permissions.
