CMN notifications and "friendly bounces"

CMN occasionally encounters an incompatibility between Notes and Exchange that it cannot correct by any practical means. CMN is able to detect most such instances and insert a brief note into the message body notifying the recipient and recommending a manual resolution. For example:

If this invitee is on an Exchange server in a different time zone from your Domino server: The counterproposed date shown here may be a day off from the actual date, due to incompatibilities between the Domino and Exchange servers.
Your calendar will process the counterproposal correctly, but you should then check your calendar to verify the date for your own information.

In some uncommon scenarios, uncorrectable calendar incompatibilities prevent the completion of whatever the sender intended. In such cases, CMN aborts the attempt rather than relaying an item that it knows will fail. Instead, CMN sends a note back to the sender with an explanation and a suggested course of action. This courtesy note back to the sender is called a "friendly bounce," since it is meant to be helpful in its explanation and suggested remedy. For example:

Your invitation has not been delivered. Encrypted invitations from Notes to Outlook are not supported, due to incompatibilities between the two environments.
Suggested Action: Resend the invitation without encryption, by de-selecting the Encrypt delivery option in Notes.

CMN active mail processing

Notes environments offer an assortment of rich-content mail features whereby messages carry "live" or "active" functional content for things such as:

•
Stored forms (created with Store form in document).
•
Embedded buttons, hotspots, collapsible sections, etc.
•
Native Notes encryption.
•
Unsupported rich-text elements (e.g., tabbed tables).

These features, which we collectively call "active mail," would normally be lost or degraded when delivered to an Exchange recipient, due to differences between the mail platforms. However, CMN’s Mail Connector can detect and process active mail content to preserve this functionality.

CMN detects messages en route to Exchange with active mail content, and encapsulates the functionality within an NSF file attachment. CMN also inserts a note into the message body:

This email contains content that can only be viewed in Lotus Notes. To view this content, double-click on this email within Outlook so it opens in a separate window. Then you may double-click on the attached file [filename] to open it in Lotus Notes.

Assuming a Notes client is still installed on the Outlook recipient’s computer, and the NSF file type is associated (in Windows) with the Notes client application, the Outlook recipient simply double-clicks the icon to open the attached NSF file into Notes, with the fully functional active mail content in view.

The additional processing required for active mail message attachments does place a slightly higher load on the Mail Connector, but in most environments the difference is negligible. In any case, active mail processing is an optional feature that is easily enabled or disabled in the Mail Connector Management Console.

About Notes 8.5 Compatibility Mode

Lotus Notes versions 8.5 and higher offer a configuration called Compatibility Mode. This configuration limits the functionality of the Notes calendar to those functions that will be seamlessly supported by other mail systems.

Some have wondered if Notes' Compatibility Mode might be a reasonable alternative to CMN’s Mail Connector for calendar coexistence. While this configuration option may suffice for organizations that use only basic calendar functions, it will limit calendar functionality for all users. IBM concedes in its own documentation that, with Compatibility Mode, "you will not be able to update more than one repeating meeting instance at a time, use custom repeating meetings, or specify weekend rules for repeating meetings." A quick comparison shows Quest CMN’s Mail Connector delivers a much richer calendar coexistence without placing limitations on end users.

While preserving a high level of calendar functionality, CMN’s Mail Connector also properly processes active mail from Notes, enables free/busy functionality between the two systems, and converts DocLinks for use in Exchange.

Mail Connector Performance Counters

CMN generates sets of performance counters for its Mail Connector that feed live data to Windows' System Monitor feature. The CMN Mail Connector generates these performance counters:

•
Message Processing Bytes Throughput: Number of message bytes processed per second.
•
Exchange To Domino Calendar Processing Throughput: Number of calendars processed per second (Exchange To Domino).

Exchange To Domino Message Processing Throughput: Number of messages processed per second (Exchange To Domino).
•
Exchange To Domino Message Processing Bytes Throughput: Number of message bytes processed per second (Exchange To Domino).
•
Active Mail Processing Throughput: Number of Active Mail- containing messages processed per second (Domino To Exchange).

Active Mail Dropdown Processing Throughput: Number of Active Mail dropdown-containing messages processed per second (Domino To Exchange).
