NetVault support policies

The Quest Product Lifecycle and Support Services Guidelines detailing End-of-Support-Life (EOSL) procedures for all product lines are available online. The Product Life Cycle tables for NetVault and NetVault SmartDisk are also available online.

Quest offers an Early Adopter (EA) Support level for NetVault with applicable qualifications. For the supported combinations, see the various tables within this guide.

Early Adopter (EA) Support:

•
Product is supported for early adoption.
•
Quest recommends that the customer test the product in a nonproduction environment before production deployment.
•
Full Support is planned for a future release.
•
Support and Development provide limited support and assistance with deployment.
•
Software updates and workarounds might not be provided.
•
When the product is officially released, the customer must update to the general availability (GA) version of the given product.

Additional support definitions used throughout this guide might include:

•
Limited Support (LS)
Support is available to provide known workarounds or fixes, no new code fixes are generated, enhancements requests are not accepted, and you are encouraged to upgrade to newest available release.
•
Discontinued Support (DS)
The release is retired or discontinued, no new patches or fixes are generated, the release is not available for download from the Support Portal, support is provided to assist with upgrading to the newest available release, and support representatives are not obligated to provide assistance with this version of the product.

Also, an individual manufacturer’s End-of-Life (EOL) and EOSL product-support policy and statements supersede any support implied directly or indirectly by the information within this guide.

Host operating system (OS) and application version support policy

In addition to what is listed in this guide, Quest provides NetVault support for host operating systems and applications where the following criteria have been met:

•
Vendor OS or application maintenance or patch versions of the same major or minor release already supported are also supported, unless otherwise stated.
•
Vendor OS or application major or minor versions that are newer than what is listed in this guide are not supported and require a separate qualification effort, unless otherwise stated.
Best reasonable effort (BRE) support

Best reasonable effort (BRE) support refers to the lengths to which Quest Support can go to assist in issues with versions of third-party operating systems, platforms, databases, and applications that are supported by the Quest product but are no longer supported by the vendor. It applies to the following scenarios:

•
When a version of NetVault Server, NetVault Client, or a plug-in supports release of operating systems, platforms, databases, and applications that are no longer supported by the vendor, Quest provides BRE support to provide known workarounds or fixes for a period of one year after the end of vendor support.
•
Quest generates no new code fixes for NetVault to support operating systems, platforms, databases, and applications that are no longer supported by the vendor except under extreme circumstances and at our discretion.

We at Quest encourage you to upgrade your unsupported operating system, platform, database, or application to a fully supported version.

Application plug-in EOSL policy

A NetVault application plug-in’s limited-support start date and EOSL date are the same as the latest major or minor NetVault version it is supported with per this guide. Each fully supported version of NetVault limits Full Support of a plug-in version to n and n-1 major plug-in releases as determined by n; in this case, n is the latest major plug-in version supported by that NetVault major release. After a major plug-in release becomes n-2, it enters LS for one year. After the one year passes, the plug-in reaches EOSL and support is discontinued for that plug-in version.

Virtualized NetVault Server and Client policy

NetVault Server and Client components are supported when running in a virtual machine (VM) as long as NetVault is running in a hypervisor guest OS that is officially supported by NetVault. Supported hypervisor programs are: KVM, Hyper-V, Oracle VM server, VMware ESXi, and Xen.

Additional notes:

•
Support considerations for NetVault Server and SmartClients:
•
Storage devices that are directly attached to an ESXi Server are not supported. Unsupported devices include both direct-attached SCSI devices and devices on Fibre Channel that are exposed to the VM through a raw-device mapping.
•
Devices connected through iSCSI are supported.
•
The VM that hosts the NetVault Server must be assigned a sufficient resource reservation in its own Resource Pool. NetVault Servers that have to compete for resources are not supported.
•
VMware vSphere High Availability (HA) and vMotion are supported for the VM that hosts the NetVault Server. However, due to variability in timings, Quest does not guarantee successful completion of backup jobs run during a migration.
•
NetVault SmartDisk does not support installation on a VM.
•
Quest may require reproduction of an issue in a non-virtualized environment in cases where it suspects an issue with the underlying virtualization infrastructure.
•
Using the Plug-in for FileSystem on the physical hypervisor server machine to perform image-level backups of the VM is not supported. Installing the Plug-in for Hyper-V or Plug-in for VMware on the physical machine to perform image-level backups of the VM is required.

Processor types and bit modes

The following table explains the nomenclature used throughout this guide to represent various types of architecture. When the processor supports both 32- and 64‑bit operating systems and applications but a specific bit mode is required, the bit mode is called out in parentheses; for example, x86‑64 (64‑bit).
