Play back a script

The following provides the procedure for play back of a script.

To play back the script:

Click Play.
The script begins play back.
When the playback completes, the Expected Time Wizard appears. The Expected Time Wizard aids the user in setting expected times and timeout values.

Enter the new Expected Time multiplier.
The Expected Time is the anticipated time it takes to run a script. The Baseline Total Time is the actual time it takes to run a script. FTR allows you to enter a simple multiplier to determine the expected time to reflect real world conditions. During the monitoring process, if the script or transaction takes longer than the specified expected time, an error is generated in Foglight.

Enter the new Time Out multiplier.
Time Out tells the FTR to stop execution and flags an error after a certain amount of time. A multiplier of two tells the FTR to take twice as long to startup, run, and shutdown than it did when the script baselined. The minimum time out value for a script is 60 seconds. When monitoring, if the script takes longer than the specified time out, the process is terminated and Foglight generates a critical error.

Click Next.
The Edit Page appears.

Click inside the Expected Time and Time Out to change the values, if required.

Click Finish.
The Analysis window displays the script analysis metrics.

 

Insert validation rules

Validation rules allow you to verify the following:

•
Anchors—validates an anchor HREF.
•
Images—validates an image SCR attribute.
•
Frames—validates the structure of the frame set.
•
Source—ensures that the source of specified frames contains the text entered.
•
Java Script—executes the Java Script entered and has the ability to raise a warning or error if the script determines that the page is not what it should be.
To insert Validation Rules:

Click the Click:Foglight Transaction Recorder instruction in the Script window.

Click Insert/Remove breakpoints on selected items in script .

Click Play and wait for the script to pause at the breakpoint.

Click Validation in the Script window toolbar.
The Validation Rules dialog appears.

Click New.
The Validation Wizard appears.

Click Verify Anchors exist on the page.

Click Next.
The Validate Anchors dialog for parameters appears. Accept the default settings.

Click Next.
The Validate Anchors dialog for parameters appears. Select several of the anchor check boxes.

Click Finish.
The Validation Rules dialog appears with the Validate Anchors displayed.
Next, you create an image validation.
To create an image validation:

Click New in the Validation Rules dialog.
The Create New Rule dialog appears.

Click Verify Images have loaded successfully.

Click Next.
The Validate Images dialog appears.

Accept the default settings. Click Next.

Click Next.
The Validate Images dialog appears.

Select several of the images check boxes.

Click Finish.
The Validation Rules dialog appears showing the anchors and images validations under Rule Name.

Click OK.

Click the Click:Foglight Transaction Recorder instruction.

Click Insert/Remove breakpoints on selected items in script to remove the breakpoint.

Click Play to playback the script.

View results

After playing back a script, the Foglight Transaction Recorder window provides charts to analyze script results. You can analyze detailed results of individual transactions, including download times, sizes, throughput, network results, and errors.

In the Scripts window, click the instructions for which you want to view the results. The results for that instruction display in the Analysis window.

The following tabs are provided:

•
Summary—after a script is played, the Summary table shows you the instruction execution times and other results. The data available varies depending on the instruction type.
•
Timing Charts—the Timing chart for a User Scenario, a Transaction, or a Folder shows the relative times for each instruction in the script. Roll over a bar or a pie slice to view details about the instruction.
•
Size Charts—the Size chart for a User Scenario, a Transaction, or a Folder shows the relative sizes for each instruction in the script. Roll over a bar or a pie slice to view details about the instruction.
•
Network Details—the Network Details table shows the network traffic occurring during the execution of an instruction. Details about HTTP, DNS, and TCP traffic are captured and displayed.
•
Network Chart—the Network chart provides a graphical representation of the network traffic occurring during the execution of an instruction. Roll over a bar to view the details about the network request.

Publish scripts to Foglight

After recording, scripts are published to Foglight for playback on the Transaction Player Agent. The Transaction Player Agent verifies that Web transactions are meet the response time expectations.

To publish scripts to Foglight:

Click Publish.
The Publish Script dialog appears.

Click Add Location .
The Manage Locations Setting dialog appears.

Click Add .
The Add Location dialog appears.

NOTE: The username and password must be entered to upload scripts. The username has to be a Foglight Management Server user assigned either “Foglight Administrator” or “End User Publisher” roles.

The following provides fields descriptions:

•
Name—the location name the Foglight Transaction Recorder uses.
•
Foglight Server—Foglight Server name.
•
Server Version—Foglight Server version.
•
Path to Projects—directory on the server where the scripts are stored. (Foglight 4 and earlier server versions only).
•
UserName—server user name.

Requires SSL—select the check box to implement a Secure Sockets Layer.

Enter the connection information.

Click OK.
The Manage Locations Setting dialog appears.

Check the desired location in Location Name.

Click OK.
The Publish Script dialog appears.

Verify that the new location is displayed in the location drop-down.

Click Save.
The script publishes to the designated Foglight server.
After publishing a script to Foglight

The Foglight browser interface allows you to define the monitoring interval/frequency, push the script to the player agent, and create service models. Refer to the Foglight Transaction Player User and Reference Guide for procedures on viewing script playback results on Foglight.
