Managing MBean Server Models

An MBean Server Model is a collection of settings that can be applied to multiple JMX agents. It specifies the MBean types for which metrics and attributes are collected, along with MBean relationship information.

Configuring a JMX agent involves examining the discovered MBeans and specifying the information to be collected from those MBeans; this information is stored as an MBean Server Model.

In addition to specifying the MBean attributes to collect, an MBean Server Model also gives structure to the MBeans you monitor. MBeans have implicit relationships to other MBeans, and the server model can be configured to make these relationships explicit. Exposing the relationship structure has two advantages: it defines a relationship structure that allows you to easily navigate between related MBeans in the dashboard, and it allows you to define parent/child relationships, where the health of a child affects the health of a parent.

MBean Server Models can be shared across agents that are monitoring the same or similar MBean types. A model would typically be shared to centrally control monitoring in a clustered environment, or to monitor installations of the same application server type in the same manner.

You can create, view, and edit MBean server models on the JMX Administration dashboard.

Using the JMX Administration Dashboard

The JMX Administration dashboard allows you to create and manage JMX Server Models.

Use the JMX Administration dashboard to review which MBean server model agents are using, and to create, edit, import, or export server models.

On the navigation panel, under Dashboards, click Application Servers> Administration > JMX.

Server Model Templates

Foglight for JMX includes five MBean server model templates that are available to you after you install the cartridge. The available server model templates are: JBoss, OracleAS, Tomcat, WebLogic, and WebSphere. You can use these server model templates as the starting point for a customized server model.

1
On the navigation panel, under Dashboards, click Application Servers> Administration > JMX.
2
On the JMX view, click Create Server Model...
4
The Select a server model list becomes active. Select the type of server you want to work with: JBoss, OracleAS, Tomcat, WebLogic, or WebSphere.
6
Click Create.
