Reviewing the Storage Growth and the Cost-related Results

The Database Storage panel allows reviewing database storage utilization during the specified time range and its effect on costs.


	IMPORTANT: The default time range of the Database Storage panel is Last 24 hours.

Using this panel allows carrying out the following tasks:

•

Reviewing the database user account and cost settings—using the Properties section. For details, see Reviewing the database properties on page 45.

•

Reviewing the database growth and its effect on estimated costs—using the Database Growth section. For details, see Reviewing the database growth and the resulting storage price on page 45.

•

Reviewing the top-fastest growing tables and indexes by size—using the Top Fastest Growing Tables & Indexes section. For details, see Reviewing the top-fastest growing tables and indexes by size on page 46.

•

Reviewing the growth of a specific database object—using the Growth of: section, which displays the growth of the database object (either a table or an index) selected in the Top Fastest Growing Tables & Indexes table. For details, see Reviewing the growth of a specific database object on page 47.

Reviewing the database properties

The Properties section provides a summary of the database properties, by displaying the following settings, which are shown in various sections of the SQL Azure home page:

•

Data center—the name of the data center to which the instance reports. This name can be either user-defined or selected from Microsoft’s list.

•

Windows Live ID—the sign-in credentials (email and password) used for entering all Windows Live services.


	IMPORTANT: If the data center and Windows Live ID have not yet been configured, both fields display a link that leads to the User Account global administration screen, used for defining these settings. This configuration is carried out at the instance level and applies to all databases within the instance. For more information, see Setting the User Account on page 71.

•

Database edition—the database’s edition type; either Web or Business.

•

Maximum Limit—the maximum storage limit allocated to the database.


	NOTE: While exceeding the maximum storage limit in the Web edition can be resolved by switching to Business edition, exceeding the maximum storage limit in Business edition requires coordination with Microsoft.

•

Price per GB—the storage price per GB.

The storage price per GB is configured via the Cost global administration screen. For more information, see Configuring Usage Costs on page 71.

Reviewing the database growth and the resulting storage price

The Database Growth section allows reviewing the changes of the database size within the specified time range, using the following views:

•

Total—displays the total change of the database size

•

Breakdown—displays the database growth by the following components:

•

Current limit—indicates the declared size the database can currently reach before resizing per the edition used.

•

In Row—the amount of space, in megabytes, reserved for in-row data types within all tables and indexes in the database

•

LOB—the amount of space, in megabytes, reserved for large object (LOB) data types within all tables and indexes in the database

•

Maximum limit—the maximum size the database can reach (varies between Web edition and Business edition)

•

Row overflow—the amount of space, in megabytes, within the table that is reserved for data types whose combined widths can exceed the maximum limit defined for a row, namely: varchar, nvarchar, varbinary, and sql_variant

Reviewing the ratio between the database's tables and indexes

The Tables-Indexes Ratio section allows reviewing the efficiency of index utilization within the database, by examining the ratio between tables and indexes by the following parameters:

•

Percent—percentage of space usage

•

Megabyte—actual space usage

•

Cost—the cost charged for space usage by either tables or indexes

Ratio that exceeds a predefined threshold can indicate inefficient index usage, which can result from indexes that require rebuild or that are no longer necessary.
