Setting up appliances as NetVault clients

To prepare for backups, you need to set up the target appliance as a NetVault™ client. This means enabling the NetVault client on the appliance, and configuring the appliance as a NetVault Backup client on the NetVault Server.

Before beginning this procedure, ensure that the appliance running the Management Server is configured and accessible on the network. You should also decide on a password. The NetVault Administrator uses the same password when configuring the backup settings for the appliance.


	IMPORTANT: NetVault does not back up appliances with the host name localhost. If your appliance uses this host name, you need to change it before you begin. For instructions, see Modifying network settings.

The following procedure assumes that this is the first time you are enabling this appliance for NetVault™ backups. If you need help logging into the Console Program, see Launching the Console Program.

To enable Foglight APM for NetVault backups:

From the Console Program main menu, select Advanced Options.

Select More Advanced Options, then Enable/Disable NetVault.

A message box prompts you to confirm that you want to enable NetVault backups.

To enable backups, select Yes.

Select the version of the NetVault server you want to use, then select OK.

When prompted, specify a password for the NetVault client, then select OK.

A message is displayed when the operation is complete. Select OK to return to the More Advanced Options screen.

Registering an appliance in NetVault

After backups are enabled on the appliance, the NetVault Administrator sets up the appliance as a NetVault™ client.

Before you begin, you need the following information:

•

IP Address — the IP Address for the appliance’s control port (eth0).

•

Password — the password used by the Network Administrator when completing the preceding procedure Enabling an appliance’s NetVault client.

Firewall Setting — when configuring the client, you must enable the Outside Firewall option or the backup fails. The appliance includes an onboard firewall that NetVault needs to pass through (using firewall ports 20031-20041 TCP and 20031 UDP) to connect with the NetVault client located on the appliance.


	NOTE: All procedures using NetVault are written using NetVault version 8.6.3. Your version may require different steps, but the required registration information should be the same.

To register a Foglight APM physical appliance as a NetVault client:

Launch the NVBU Console on the server where NetVault is installed.

Click Client Management.

The NVBU Client Management window opens.

If the appliance’s host name is not in the Available NVBU Machines list:

In the Find NVBU Machine field, type the IP address of the appliance.

Click Find.

The appliance appears in the Available NVBU Machines list.

In the Available NVBU Machines list, right-click the appliance and select Add As Client.
