Finding the Foglight APM dashboards

To find the Foglight APM dashboards, in the Foglight navigation panel, under Dashboards, expand APM. Top-level APM dashboards enable you to view aggregated data by sequence, transaction, or geographical perspective. The rest of the dashboards are organized into menu groupings that reflect configuration tasks, search activities, and support tasks.
The APM menu contains the following menu items:

Configure—configure the software components, modify what data is captured, and define how the data should be handled or analyzed before being stored.
•
Traffic Analysis—configure what happens to the data after it has been captured. You can define applications, analyzers, and sensitive data policies.
•
Traffic Capture—configure the software components and assign them to capture groups. Set options to resolve gaps in the data captured by default, decrypt secure traffic, and capture additional information that makes the data more meaningful.
•
Configure Advanced Options—integrate with other products and configure less frequently used options to better reflect your environment. Usually, you can leave the advanced options with default values until you need to change them.
•
Error Explorer—display the top sampled requests with errors for a selected transaction during a selected timeslice.
•
Geographical Perspective—assess the performance of your web sites and applications by city, country, or region.
•
Response Time Breakdown—display the top sampled requests for a selected transaction during a selected timeslice.
•
Search—search the Archiver databases for details about hits, sequences, and sessions. For example, this workflow uses the Hits dashboard to verify that Foglight is collecting data.
•
Sequence Explorer—assess the performance of important workflows in your web applications.
•
Support—monitor the performance of your appliances and manage saved configurations.
•
Transactions—monitor real user experiences with or without the other transactional data captured by Foglight.
•
Web Site and Endpoints—assess the performance of your web sites and endpoints.

This Getting Started workflow introduces you to some of the dashboards available under the Configure and Search menus. The rest of the dashboards are covered in the other sections of this guide and in the Foglight APM User Guide.

Registering Sniffers and Archivers

NOTE: If you are using an All-in-One Appliance with no additional appliances, you can skip this step. The local Sniffer and Archiver are already preregistered and assigned to a default capture group.
In a multi-appliance environment, you may have one or more Sniffers and one or more Archivers hosted on different appliances. Sniffers capture, decrypt, and analyze web traffic, and transmit content and metrics to one or more Archivers within the same capture group as the Sniffer. Archivers capture content and metrics collected by Sniffers, analyze that content, and maintain databases used for searching, reporting, and replay. For more information about how Archivers work, see Understanding how Foglight captures real user data.
To see the data being captured and stored by Sniffers and Archivers, you need to register the Sniffers and Archivers and optionally organize them into capture groups.

Creating Capture Groups

By default, all registered Sniffers and Archivers are assigned to the Default Capture Group. If you want, you can create your own capture groups to separate data coming from distinct areas of the network or different geographical locations. For more information, see Planning capture groups.
To add a capture group:

Click APM > Configure > Traffic Capture > Capture Groups.

Click Add.

In the Add Capture Group dialog box, complete the options. For help with options, see Defining capture groups.

NOTE: The Sniffers and Archivers areas are display only. To add Sniffers and Archivers to the group, see Registering Sniffers and Registering Archivers.

Click Save.

Registering Sniffers

When using an All-in-One Appliance, the Sniffer component comes preregistered as the Local Sniffer—you do not need to register it. For installations with standalone Sniffer Appliances, you need to add and configure the Sniffers.
To add a Sniffer definition:

Click APM > Configure > Traffic Capture > Sniffers.

Click Add.

In the Add Sniffer dialog box, complete the options. For help with options, see Defining Sniffers.

NOTE: From the Capture Group list, you can select a capture group you defined earlier. For more information, see Creating Capture Groups.

Click Save.
