A software or hardware firewall might be blocking communications. Check your Windows firewall, Linux Iptables or Unix IPFilter.
Although NSD-13 (Client Backup fails writing to smart disk when Firewall port range is selected in netvault.) was reported to be fixed in SmartDisk 1.1, it was actually fixed on NVBU 8.5.1, the customer MUST have 8.5.1 installed both on the server and the smartclient and client in order for the fix to be working.
Open the SmartDisk Server's firewall port 37453 for bi-directional TCP and UDP traffic.
