Archiver

An Archiver receives data from the Sniffers in its capture group. It performs traffic analysis tasks on the data, such as running analyzers on hits, sequences, or sessions to generate additional details, fields, and metrics. The Archiver then stores all the data (captured and generated) in its local Archiver database for searching and reporting.

Sniffer

A Sniffer captures raw packets of web traffic crossing its tap points on the network and/or from instrumented browser pages. Sniffers decode, decrypt, and analyze the packets. This includes activities such as SSL decryption and reassembling hit-level and page-level fields. The Sniffer transmits the data to an Archiver within the same capture group for further analysis and storage. A capture group defines a set of Sniffers and Archivers that work together.

Browser Instrumentation

While more invasive than the passive monitoring performed by a Sniffer, browser instrumentation is sometimes the only reliable way to track down performance issues occurring outside of your own web servers, such as slow content service by external web servers in a Content Delivery Network (CDN) or inefficient processing by client browsers in a Web 2.0 application. Instrumentation has two parts: the instrumentation library and the instrumentation listener. You add the Foglight APM instrumentation library to a website or a web page using as a JavaScript include statement. An onsite web server and the Sniffer together act as the instrumentation listener. The web server receives data from the instrumented pages and the Sniffer, which is monitoring the server, parses out the data and sends it on to the Archiver with all the other captured data.

Relayer

Each Sniffer and Archiver contains a Relayer component that handles communication from the Sniffers to the Archivers. Relayers also function as load-balancers, distributing captured data evenly among the Archivers within a capture group.
