Monitoring a single ESXi host

In this configuration, you install a Sniffer on the host you want to monitor, and install the Management Server and an Archiver on a separate dedicated ESXi® host. To connect the components to the virtual network and to each other, you need to define port groups on a standard virtual switch using either vSphere® or vCenter® Server. The following diagram shows the port groups and connections.


	TIP: If the monitored host has enough resources, you may be able to install all components on the same host. This All-on-one-host variation requires a few tweaks to the standard configuration.

All-on-one-host variation

If you want to create a self-contained demo or testing environment, install all components on the monitored host (resources permitting). In this case, note the following important differences in the configuration:

•

The Sniffer and Archiver communicate directly with one another. You do not need to define a Capture Network port group.

•

Foglight runs in the monitored virtual network, which means that the Sniffer monitors traffic generated through the Foglight browser interface. Exclude this traffic by defining a subnet filter with a mask that matches the IP address of the virtual machine hosting the Management Server (for example, 192.188.1.10/32). For instructions, see “Excluding subnets from data collection” in the Foglight APM Administration and Configuration Guide.

Scalability

If your monitoring requirements expand to include additional hosts, reconfigure your monitoring solution as described in Monitoring multiple ESXi hosts.

Installing virtual appliances to monitor a single host

The installation process includes the following steps, which are described later in this section.

If using a second host for the Management Server and Archiver (recommended), deploy the Foglight-VirtualAPM template on a separate dedicated host.
