Processes grid

This grid presents a list of all processes that are running on the machine.

The Processes drilldown is NOT updated every time that Spotlight data is refreshed, as that may mean the update of hundreds of items of information at a time. To update this drilldown manually, press the F5 key, or choose the Refresh option from the View menu.

NOTE:
Because information in the Processes drilldown is not updated when Spotlight data is refreshed, data from the drilldown is NOT available in historical snapshots.

Columns

  • Process Name:  Identifies the executable file that the process runs from.

  • Nice:  The priority of the process; a high value means that the process is 'nice', and will only be allowed CPU time when less 'nice' processes are idle.

  • PID:  The 'process ID', a number that uniquely identifies the process on this machine.

  • PPID:  The ID for the parent process of the process specified by the PID.

  • % CPU:  The percentage of a single CPU that the process has used during the most recent sample period.

  • State:  The state of the process. The names of process states are different on different platforms.

        AIX

    • A  Active.
    • W  Swapped.
    • I   Idle.

        HP-UX

    • W  Waiting.
    • I  Intermediate.
    • X  Growing.

        Linux

    • D  Uninterruptible sleep.
    • W  Has no resident pages.
    • <  High-priority process.
    • N  Low-priority tasks.
    • L  Has pages locked into memory.

        Solaris

    • O  Process is running on a processor
    • S  Sleeping: process is waiting for an event to complete.
    • R  Runnable: process is on run queue.
    • Z  Zombie state: process terminated and parent not waiting.
    • T  Process is stopped, either by a job control signal or because it is being traced.

  • Terminal:  The UNIX terminal session where a user started the specified process. If the process was not started by a user, the terminal value is set to "?".

  • User:  The name of the user who invoked the process.

  • Time:  The amount of time that the process has existed in the CPU.

  • Virt Mem (MB):  The amount of virtual memory that this process has allocated.
