LiteSpeed for SQL Server 8.9.5 - Security and Compliance Guide

Log Reader - Read Transaction Logs

Use the Read Log Wizard to load the transaction log into the Log Reader.

Note: To view the transaction log of an active database, such as on the Full Log page, make sure the Log Reader server components are installed on the SQL Server instance hosting the database. For more information, see Install Log Reader Server Components.

To read a transaction log

  1. Select the Log Reader window in the Navigation pane (CTRL+6).
  2. Ensure there is at least one active connection to a database, then select Tools | Administer | Log Reader. This will automatically launch the Read Log Wizard.

    Or

Click on the Log Reader toolbar.

  3. Complete the wizard.

    Notes:

Log Reader reads logs from disk or the cloud.

    • From the Select Backup Files page select Disk or Cloud. Selection of Cloud is recommended for cloud-hosting scenarios or for very fast connections between the LiteSpeed console and cloud storage.

    Log Reader supports striped files.

    1. Select any file from the Select Backup Files page.
    2. Select backup sets (from selected files) on the Select Backup Sets page. One of these selected items should be a full backup. All stripe files will be united in appropriate backup sets.

On the Select Backup Files page, consider the following rules for specifying additional transaction log backup files to read :

    • If you selected Native or LiteSpeed Backup File, you must specify additional backup files in increasing sequential order from the selected full backup file. For example, select the file full_backup and the subsequent files following transaction_log_backup_1 and transaction_log_backup_2. You cannot select to read transaction_log_backup_2 only.

Log Reader can read backup files from local or Cloud storage. When Cloud storage is selected, please specify the correct Cloud account details.

    • If you selected Online Transaction Log or Offline Transaction Log, you must specify log files in decreasing order from the selected log file. For example, if you select online_log and latest transaction_log_backup_N-1, you must select transaction_log_backup_N. You cannot select to read transaction_log_backup_N-1 only.
    • If you selected Online Transaction Log, you can read additional transaction log backup files only without reading the online log itself. Select the Parse only transaction logs from the list above checkbox to read the backup files only.

With the Log Reader, you can view the following information from the transaction log:

Note: When you read the transaction log of an online, offline or detached database after the SQL Server was upgraded, the Log Reader does not process and display the transaction log entries that were created before the upgrade.
