In order to accomplish this a role within virtual center will need to be created.
- Log into the Virtual Center web client
- Menu > Administration
- Access Control > Roles
- Click the + sign to create a new Role
- Choose the permissions needed for Rapid Recovery related tasks. The permissions needed for a full feature Rapid Recovery are in the attached PDF, they are also listed here: Rapid recovery ESXi 6 | 6.5 | 6.7 permissions (4039423) (quest.com)
- Click Next
- Define a Role Name and a Description
- Click Finish
- On the left click on Single Sign On > Users and Groups
- Under Domain click on the down arrow and select VSPHERE.LOCAL
- Click Add User
- Define a user | password
- Click OK
- Click Menu > Host and Clusters
Now that you have created the role and the user you have to apply the user to the various Resources Rapid Recovery can integrate properly with VMware. Your specific environment might differ from these instructions, however this will be based upon a Virtual Center having a single DataCenter and a Cluster which hold the hosts that we need to be licensed within Rapid Recovery.
- Log into the Virtual Center web client
- Click on the Virtual Center on the left
- Click on Permissions
- Click the + to Add a permission
- Under Add Permissions Select vsphere.local for the source and choose the user you created
- For the Role pick Read Only
- Click OK
- Click on your DataCenter on the left
- Click on Permissions
- Click the + to Add a permission
- Under Add Permissions Select vsphere.local for the source and choose the user you created
- For the Role pick Read Only
- Click OK
- Click on your Cluster on the left
- Click on Permissions
- Click the + to Add a permission
- Under Add Permissions Select vsphere.local for the source and choose the user you created
- For the Role pick the Role that you defined previously in the above steps (If you want to add this cluster to Rapid Recovery here is where you pick the role you created)
- Click OK
- In the upper left hand core click on the Storage icon to list your Datastores
- On the left click on the Datacenter (or the individual datastores themselves)
- Repeats steps 15-18
- Click the checkbox to Propagate to children
- Click OK
You should be able to add the Virtual Center to Rapid Recovery with the credential you created and it will only see the VMware sockets that you specifically identified via permissions. If the Virtual Center is not already in Rapid Recovery you can add it new, if it is then you can click on the Virtual Center on the side of the Rapid Recovery console, click on Settings, and under Credentials specify this new account.
These steps will allow you to add the VC into RR to perform backups. If you want this account to be able to perform restores as well, you will have to add the role you created to the user at the Virtual Center level an choose to 'Propagate to children.'
