Rapid Recovery utilizes VMware Virtual Infrastructure eXtension (VIX) APIs to interact with VMware ESXi environments. Transport modes are methods of communication and data transmission between the device doing the backup and the ESXi environment. The available transport modes are:
Each transport mode has different benefits and requires different environmental configurations to work.
SAN Transport Mode
This transport mode allows Rapid Recovery to connect directly to your ESXi SAN storage environment and take backups directly from the SAN, rather than all data being processed through the ESXi host. The primary advantage of this transport mode is that the network traffic during a backup runs solely over the SAN network, minimizing its impact on your infrastructure.
To configure the SAN transport mode:
Caution: Do NOT initialize or format the unknown or offline disks from the backup server - these are your VMware datastore volumes. Any changes you make to them could potentially corrupt your datastore volumes and cause your production ESXi environment to go offline.
HotAdd Transport Mode
This transport mode only works when Rapid Recovery Core is installed on a virtual machine within the VMware environment it is protecting. During the backup process the virtual machine disks being backed up are mounted directly to the Rapid Recovery virtual machine to be read. The primary advantage of this transport mode is that network traffic is reduced by allowing the Core server to directly interact with the virtual disks it is backing up rather than transferring the data across the production network.
To configure the HotAdd transport mode:
Caution: Do NOT initialize or format the unknown or offline disks on the Rapid Recovery Core server - these represent your virtual machine disks. Any changes could potentially corrupt your virtual machine disks and cause damage to your production VMs.
NBD/NBDSSL and File Transport Modes
These transport modes are the default modes used by Rapid Recovery when using ESXi agentless protection. During the backup process the backup data will be sent over the production network to the Core server. These are the simplest transport modes to use.
To configure the NBD/NBDSSL and File transport modes:
