Toad Data Point 6.2.3 - Installation Guide

Data Objects in Toad Intelligence Central

Note: This feature is available in the Toad Data Point Professional edition only and requires access to a Toad Intelligence Central server.

Objects

You will find the following TIC objects displayed in the Object Explorer. Review the following definitions:

Object Definition
View A view is a query. When you access a view, the query is executed and the data is retrieved on the remote source. A view is created by publishing a query to a remote data source. A view always reflects the current data in the source table. See Views in Intelligence Central.
Snapshot

A snapshot consists of rows of data created using the stored SQL query and the metadata (mapping information) and data source connection to the remote object. A snapshot is created by publishing data from a query.

A snapshot is a copy of the data taken at a specific point in time, which you can refresh manually, or at scheduled intervals, to reflect the current data in the source. See Snapshots in TIC.

Dataset

A dataset consists of rows of data from a remote source. Once published, a dataset is no longer associated with the data source. You can publish data as a dataset from a query, table, result set, or data grid.

Data from the following sources can only be published as a dataset: an Excel file, a Local Storage database, or an Access database. See Datasets.

Table

A TIC table is created using the TIC Console, not Toad Data Point.

A table in TIC consists of the metadata of the remote object ( the mapping information that allows TIC to map to the data in the remote object). A table is not refreshable, but always reflects the current data in the source table. See Tables in TIC.

Object Properties

Use the following matrix to compare the properties of each of the data objects in Toad Intelligence Central.

Object Mapped Static Dynamic Refreshable Can be shared Can be

Legend

Mapped—The object maps to data in a table or tables in a remote data source.

Static—The object's data does not change to reflect the current data in the source table/tables because the object is not mapped to a source.

Dynamic—The object's data always reflects the data in the source table/tables, because the object loads from the data source.

Refreshable—The object can be refreshed to reflect the current data in the source table/tables.

Can be shared—The object can be private, public, or shared by a list of users you specify. See Specify Sharing and Manage Privileges for Objects for more information.

Can be managed by other users—The object, when shared, can be modified by the users it is shared with.

Can be locked—The object can be locked so that certain operations cannot be performed. See Lock and Unlock Objects for more information.

Purpose

Each TIC object is intended to have a slightly different purpose. Use the following table to distinguish between objects and to pick the best object for your purposes.

Object Purpose
View

A view always reflects the current data in the remote data source. A view is a query and is published using the Publishing dialog. You can share a view and the managing privileges.

Snapshot Use this object when you want to refresh data from the source at regular intervals or manually at a time of your choosing. You can share the object and the refresh privileges.
Dataset Use a dataset to store data from a result set and keep it static. You can keep a dataset private or share it with others. A dataset does not reflect current data from the source.
Table

This object reflects the current data in one table in a remote data source. A table is like a mirror of the remote source table.

Note: Tables are created using the TIC Console, not Toad Data Point.
