Select A Memory Management Mode And Allocate Global Memory

There are five steps to use the Memory Management Page. This page documents Step 1.

You can skip this step if you are satisfied with the current memory management mode and global memory allocations, however you should ensure you are satisfied before you fine tune memory components. You should review all your changes against the charts. Remember, you can use this page to investigate the impact of making changes without applying those changes. If appropriate, there is a procedure to apply changes as documented in the last step.

To use the Memory Management Page

  1. Select A Memory Management Mode And Allocate Global Memory
  2. Review Your Changes Against The Charts
  3. Fine Tune Memory Components
  4. Review Your Changes Against The Charts
  5. Apply Changes

Select A Memory Management Mode

When you open the Memory Management page the current memory management mode is selected.

Select a different mode to view the hypothetical status of Oracle memory components under that mode.

Mode Description
Manual Automatic memory management is OFF.
Auto SGA Only (ASMM) Automatic shared memory management is ON for the SGA (System Global Area).
Auto Memory (AMM)

Automatic memory management is ON for the SGA and PGA (Program Global Area).

Note: Available for Oracle 11g and later.

Allocate Global Memory

When you open the Memory Management page the current memory sizes for the system and database are displayed.

Click Edit to view the hypothetical effects of memory reallocation.

Spotlight will comment on the changes. Spotlight's comments may suggest you take further action. The comments may state Spotlight's calculation on memory usage in the selected mode.

Review the effect of the changes: Review Your Changes Against The Charts.

Memory Description Applicable Modes
Total Physical Memory

The total amount of physical memory on the host machine.

Note: Value N/A if Spotlight is not monitoring the host machine.

All
Free Physical Memory

The amount of available physical memory on the host machine.

Note: Value N/A if Spotlight is not monitoring the host machine.

All
Total Oracle Memory

The total amount of physical memory allocated to Oracle processes.

Note: Value N/A if Spotlight is not monitoring the host machine.

All
Maximum SGA Memory

The maximum amount of memory that can be allocated to the System Global Area.

Note: Any changes you make to this value are applied only when the database is restarted.

Manual and ASMM
Dynamic SGA Memory The amount of SGA memory that can be allocated dynamically by the database at runtime. ASMM
Amount of Dynamic Memory The amount of total Oracle memory that can be allocated dynamically by the database at runtime. AMM

Note: When a memory area is in AUTO memory management mode, Oracle resizes the area automatically according to the current load.
