How to set up journaling for Exchange and archiving a journal mailbox with Metalogix Archive Manager Exchange Edition (4299575)

There is a business requirement to set up journaling to ensure a copy of all messages that flow through Exchange is archived

1. Enable and configure journaling for Exchange. For information on how to do so, please refer to the links below:

   
   Exchange 2013/2016/2019

2. Create a new mailbox database in Exchange for the journal recipient mailbox, then run the following command to ensure that the Metalogix SuperUser account has permissions required for mailbox databases in the environment:

   Get-MailboxDatabase | Add-ADPermission -User  -ExtendedRights send-as,receive-as,ms-exch-store-admin
   

3. Create a user defined group in Archive Manager for the journal mailbox, import the journal mailbox into Archive Manager, then add it to the new user defined group. For steps on how to create a user defined group or import mailboxes, please refer to the following:

4. Use the following settings, which will configure Archive Manager to archive all messages from the mailbox regardless of size or date it was received.

   

5. Set up an archive job for the journal mailbox. It is recommended for this type of job to be scheduled to run multiple times throughout the day to minimize the time between when the messages are generated and moved to the archive as much as possible.

   

6. Configure a new retention policy for the journal mailbox using the settings below, which will delete the messages from the mailbox after they have been archived to ensure that all archived messages are removed from Exchange.

   

   Note: The retention time set for this and all other policies should be configured based on an organization’s policy for data management.
