LATEST – August 2021

KACE Cloud Mobile Device Manager

We are excited to announce our most recent updates to KACE Cloud Mobile Device Manager.

August 2021

In our July release, we are introducing three new features—time zone collection, device location, import and export of report definitions, and the ability to apply custom profiles to Windows devices.

New features

  • Time zone collected during Inventory (Android, iOS only, and Windows only). Starting in this release, on each Inventory, KACE Cloud MDM collects the time zone of managed Android, iOS, and Windows devices. You can see it on the Device Details tab.
  • Finding out the location of a company-owned Windows device. KACE Cloud MDM allows you to quickly perform an on-demand request of a company-owned Windows device. You can also force location services, to prevent errors that occur when location settings are disabled on the managed device.
NOTE: Requesting a location of a Windows virtual machine may not provide accurate results.
  • Ability to import and export report definitions. This feature allows you to easily import or export report definitions, when needed. This can help you create a local copy of your report configuration, share it with other users, or to quickly import previously backed up report definitions. Report definitions include the report name, description, the report query, and any tags associated with the report (if applicable). In addition to the WHERE clause of the report query (appearing in the Query field on the report detail page), the report query also includes the name of the entity set, the selected columns, and the name of the column used to sort the report. This information is stored in YAML format, used for writing configuration files, or other types of files, for storing or transmitting data.
  • Applying custom profiles to Windows devices. A KACE Cloud MDM custom profile references one or more existing Windows policies and allows you to apply it to applicable Windows devices. You can, for example, enable Location services on a target device by creating a custom profile that makes use of a Windows policy, and then applying that profile to a desired device.

Configuration of Microsoft Windows devices through MDM uses a special format language called SyncML (Synchronization Markup Language).  This format language enables you to specify keys (in the form of URI’s) and values to configure the target device. The process of referencing Windows policies is fairly technical and it assumes that you have a good understanding of the Windows Policy configuration service provider (CSP).

You can create and manage custom profiles in the Library, like other KACE Cloud MDM configuration settings. There are two types of custom profiles: Configuration Profiles allow you to assign values to device settings and as such can be applied to devices either directly, or by adding it to an applicable KACE Cloud MDM policy. Command Profiles can run only once on a target device, and can be directly associated to the device, but cannot be added to a policy.
