What do the different metrics for the Host Operating System represent on the SQL Server agent homepage with a VMware agent configured?
The SQL Server cartridge integrates with the Infrastructure cartridge, and uses WindowsAgents for some for OS data.
Integration with VMWare agents was created for data presentation only, there is no data integration being performed.
CPU Utilization
In the CPU Display, the percentage of utilized CPU shown is a component of all of the CPU Utilization used in the instance. This is broken down by the CPU usage used by the SQL Server process and all other processes.
In a VM environment however, if the CPU utilization shown in VMware Explorer for an instance is 10%, the SQL Server process is 25%, and all processes is 75% this indicates that the SQL Server process uses one quarter of the (total) 10% CPU Utilization used by the instance.
CPU metrics in the Performance Tab (i.e. CPU Wait and Total CPU Usage) come from the SQL Server agent as well and does not use VMware data.
Please refer to KB 140511 for more information on how VMWare cartridge compute CPU metrics.
Memory Utilization
In the Memory Display, the percentage of utilized RAM shown is a component of all of the Memory Utilization used in the instance. This is broken down by the memory used by the SQL Server process and all other processes.
In a VM environment however, if the memory utilization shown in VMware Explorer for an instance is 13%, the SQL Server process is 50%, and all processes is 72% this indicates that the SQL Server process uses one half of the (total) 13% Memory Utilization used by the instance.
Please refer to KB 140511 for more information on how VMWare cartridge compute CPU metrics.
Disk Utilization
Disk Utilization in the SQL Server cartridge is "The percentage of time the busiest disk spent serving system-wide I/O requests." This metric is obtained from the WindowsAgent (Infrastructure/IC agent). When the IC agent is disabled, there would be no Disk Utilization metrics data in the SQL Server agent.
Since vFoglight does not collect this specific kind of data, the metric "Disk Utilization" will be N/A when the SQL Server cartridge is configured in limited mode when it is not integrated with an IC agent (WindowsAgent) using a resource mapping in the Credentials area.
Please see KB 119600 for more information on how do DB, VMWare, and IC cartridges work when collecting OS metrics.
