Choose a Scheduling Method (LiveReorg)

The Choose Scheduling Method page displays for LiveReogs only. This page allows you to select one of the following options for scheduling script execution.

  • To run, to schedule (to run once), or to store the script, choose Schedule Script Execution.
  • To schedule a script for recurring execution, choose Schedule Script Generation.

Scheduled script generation allows you to save the Reorg Manager settings as a Reorg Plan which is then used to generate and execute the script at a later time. A Windows scheduler task is created to run the Reorg Plan. Scheduled script generation is available for LiveReorg only. See About Scheduling a Recurring Reorganization to learn about the advantages of this method.

To run the script immediately, select Schedule Script Execution.

Prior to scheduling the script, review space usage information on the Space Usage Summary tab. See Review Space Usage for more information.

Select a scheduling method

  1. After specifying options in the Customize Object Allocations page for a LiveReorg, click Next.
  2. In the Choose Scheduling Method page that displays, select one of the following options:
    • Schedule Script Execution—Select to execute the script immediately, to store the script without executing, or to schedule the script.

Selecting this option opens the Schedule Script Execution page. See Schedule Script Execution in Wizards for next steps.

    • Schedule Script Generation—Select to save the Reorg Manage settings as a Reorg Plan and schedule script generation and execution. Use this method if you want to schedule script execution on a recurring basis. This method also allows you to schedule a script to run once. You can modify the execution schedule in the Space Manager Scheduled Tasks window.

When this method is used, the script is executed immediately after the script is generated.

Selecting this method opens the Schedule Script Generation page. See Schedule Script Generation for next steps.

Schedule Script Execution

Use the Schedule Script Execution page of the Reorg Manager or Partitioning Wizard to run, schedule, or store a script. You can also open the script in the Editor to review it (or run it).

Prior to scheduling the script, review space usage information on the Space Usage Summary tab. See Review Space Usage for more information.

From the Schedule Script Execution page you can do any of the following:

  • View (or run) the script in the Editor
  • Schedule the script to run once
  • Execute the script immediately (schedule script to run immediately)
  • Store the script without scheduling it

Note: For LiveReorg scripts, if you want to schedule the script to run on a recurring basis, return to the Choose Scheduling Method page and select Schedule Script Generation. See Choose a Scheduling Method (LiveReorg) and About Scheduling a Recurring Reorganization for more information.

See About Running and Scheduling Scripts to learn more about your script execution options and to review important considerations and best practices.

To view (or run) the script in the Editor

  • Click View in Editor to open the script in the Editor window to review it before you schedule it.
  • You can also run the script interactively from the Editor window. See Run Scripts from the Editor for more information.

Important: Live reorganization scripts and scripts that use FastCopy or parallel QSA processes cannot be run from the SQL Editor. They must be scheduled and run by QSA. These scripts contain commands that must be interpreted by QSA. To run a script in QSA, it must be scheduled (even when executed immediately).

To schedule the script to run once

  1. Select Run at to run the script at a certain date and time.

Note: Reorganization scripts should be run as soon as possible after they are generated. If the data structures of the objects in the script are modified between script generation and execution, the DDL and DML statements in the script can cause errors and/or data loss during script execution.

See Schedule Scripts, to learn more about scheduling scripts.

  2. Select a date and time at which you want the scheduled script to run.
  3. Enter a name for the script.
  4. Click Submit. Space Manager stores the scheduled script and displays a confirmation message.
  5. Click Yes in the prompt to open the Script/Job Monitor (or select Manage | Job/Script Monitor).
  6. Your script displays in the list of scripts/jobs in the Job Monitor. If not, click to refresh the list.
  7. Use the Script/Job Monitor window to manage your script. You can reschedule, execute, or delete the script. You can monitor status of the script or change the approval option (automatic or wait for approval). You can open the script or view script logs. See Using Job Monitor to Monitor Scripts for more information.
  8. After the script is stored, you can close the Reorg Manager or Partitioning Wizard.

To execute the script immediately

  1. Select Execute immediately to run the script immediately, as soon as it is stored in the Space Manager repository.
  2. Enter a name for the script.
  3. Click Submit. The script is scheduled to run immediately by QSA. Monitor script execution from the Scripts/Job Monitor.

To store the script without scheduling it

  1. Select Store without scheduling to store the script and schedule it later from the Script/Job Monitor.
  2. Enter a name for the script.
  3. Click Submit. Space Manager displays a confirmation message that the script is successfully stored.
  4. Click Yes in the prompt to open the Script/Job Monitor (or select Manage | Job/Script Monitor).
  5. Your script displays in the list of scripts/jobs in the Job Monitor. If not, click to refresh the list.
  6. To schedule the script, right-click the script and select Schedule. Select a date and time to execute the script.
    • Or you can right-click the script and select Properties. Then select one of the Scheduling Info options in the Script Attributes tab.

Tip: Click Auto-Refresh in the Script/Job Monitor window to specify a frequency at which to automatically refresh the scripts list.

Save Reorg Manager Settings

Space Manager provides two ways to save Reorg Manager settings: Save as Default or Saved Reorg Plan.

Saved Reorg Plan

Space Manager allows you to save the settings you select in the Reorg Manager as a Reorg Plan to reuse later. You can save the settings at any stage in the wizard. Saving Reorg Manager settings allows you to save the reorganization parameters selected on each page of the Reorg Manager wizard, as well as the Objects to be Reorganized list. This feature is also available in the Partitioning Wizard.

To use a saved Reorg Plan, open it from the File menu. The Reorg Manager then launches with the saved settings and object list applied. You can have multiple saved Reorg Plans.

Tip: To save an unfinished reorg preparation in the Reorg Manager or Partitioning Wizard and continue it later, save it as a Reorg Plan.

Save As Default

You can also save the settings in the Reorg Manager or Partitioning Wizard to use as the default settings. Once you save the settings as default, Space Manager displays these settings each time you use the Reorg Manager or Partitioning Wizard.

To save a Reorg Plan

  1. You can save a Reorg Plan by clicking the Save Reorg Plan button found in the following locations:
    • On any page of the Reorg Manager (LiveRorg or Standard Reorg).
    • On the Schedule Script Generation page of the Reorg Manager (LiveReorg only). A Reorg Plan is used when you schedule script generation. See Schedule Script Generation for more information.
    • On any page of the Partitioning Wizard.
  2. Enter a name for the file. The Reorg Plan is saved as an XML file.

To open a saved Reorg Plan

  1. Select File | Open Saved Reorg Plan.
  2. Select a previously-saved Reorg Plan (.xml). Click Open.
    • If the settings were saved from the Reorg Manager, the Reorg Manager opens with the saved settings applied automatically.
    • If the settings were saved from the Partitioning Wizard, the Partitioning Wizard opens with the saved settings applied automatically.
  3. You can use the settings "as is" or modify them further before saving, executing, or scheduling the script.
  4. To edit a saved Reorg Plan, open the plan (File | Open Saved Reorg Plan), modify the settings, then save the plan using the same file name.

To Save (settings) as Default

  1. In any applicable page of the Reorg Manager or Partitioning Wizard, click Save As Default.
  2. The current settings are saved and will be applied each time you launch the Reorg Manager or Partitioning Wizard from anywhere except a saved Reorg Plan. Saved settings in the Reorg Plan override the default settings.

Tip: In addition to the two methods described in this topic, you can also specify some default options for the Partitioning Wizard in the Options dialog (Tools | Options | Partitioning Wizard). See Partitioning Wizard Defaults.
