Connecting Sniffers to Archivers

The number of Sniffers and Archivers in your installation determines how you connect the appliances to each other, that is, with a direct cable or with a private switch. For more information, see Private network switch for the capture subnet.

NOTE: If you are using a single All-in-One Appliance, you can skip this step. The internal Sniffer and Archiver are already connected.

Connecting one Sniffer to one Archiver

In an installation with one Sniffer and one Archiver located on different appliances, use a network cable to connect the appliances’ auxiliary ports. For more information, see Planning an installation of physical appliances.
To connect one Sniffer to one Archiver:

Connect the Auxiliary Port (eth1) on the Sniffer’s appliance to the Auxiliary Port (eth1) on the Archiver’s appliance. The Sniffer can now send data to the Archiver.

Connecting Sniffers to Archivers

In an installation with more than one Sniffer and/or Archiver, you need to connect the appliances through the private switch. The relayer components automatically perform load balancing across all the Archivers. One Sniffer can send data to up to 32 Archivers. For more information, see Planning an installation of physical appliances.
To connect Sniffers to Archivers:

Connect the Auxiliary Port (eth1) on each Sniffer’s appliance and each Archiver’s appliance to a private network switch.

Starting physical appliances and configuring remote access

Before powering on an appliance for the first time, connect a monitor and keyboard to it. After you turn on the appliance, you should immediately configure the Dell Remote Access Controller (DRAC) port so that you can log into the appliance remotely to perform administrative tasks in the future. Then you can remove the monitor and keyboard, attach them to the next appliance, and repeat this procedure.
When configuring DRAC, you need to specify the appliance’s DRAC IP Address and Gateway IP Address. For more information, see Network information required for physical appliances.

IMPORTANT: To open the DRAC setup menu, you must interrupt the initialization process when prompted.
To start an appliance and configure remote access:

Connect a monitor to the Video Port.

Connect a keyboard to one of the USB Ports.

Press the power button to start the appliance.
The power-on indicator lights when the appliance system power is on.

Closely monitor the boot-up sequence. When the message “Press <CTRL-E> for Remote Access Setup within 5 sec” appears, press Ctrl+E.
The DRAC setup screen appears. Your version of the DRAC setup screen may be different than that used to create the following steps. If necessary, see the Dell Remote Access Controller documentation.

To configure remote access, complete the following steps.
a
Select LAN User Configuration using the arrow keys, and press Enter.
b
Change the default User Login and Password setting.
c
Select LAN Parameters.
d
Select Ethernet IP Address, and press Enter.
e
In the Ethernet IP Address box, type the DRAC IP Address, and press Enter.
f
In the Default Gateway box, type the Gateway IP Address, and press Enter.
g
Press the Esc key to exit the DRAC setup menu.
The DRAC setup is complete and remote access is now enabled. Allow the appliance to finish booting.

When you see the log in prompt, do one of the following:
•
To complete the appliance setup remotely (recommended), leave the appliance at the log in prompt, and disconnect the monitor and keyboard. Repeat this procedure for each of your appliances. When all appliances are configured for remote access, go to Launching the Console Program remotely with DRAC and then Setting up appliances.

To complete the appliance setup now, go to Setting up appliances.
