Stopping Foglight and running a backup

You use the appliance’s Console Program to stop the Management Server. After the processes stop, you use NetVault™ to back up the file system. The Database Repository is automatically backed up as part of this process.

IMPORTANT: Before you begin, ensure that the appliance is registered as a NetVault client. For instructions, see Setting up appliances as NetVault clients.
To stop processes and run a backup of an appliance:

Log in to the original appliance’s Console Program.

Select Advanced Options, and then Stop All Processes.
The Console Program shuts down all running processes on the appliance.

After the processes stop, launch the NVBU Console on the NetVault server and complete the following steps:
a
Click Backup.
The NVBU Backup window opens.

In the Selections tab, expand the branch: <appliance_name>/File System/opt/quest/foglight.

In the Job Title box, specify a name for the file system backup.

To run the backup, click the Traffic Light icon.
A message confirms that the job was submitted successfully, and the backup begins.

Close the NVBU Backup window.

To monitor the status of the backup, click Status and select the file system backup. When the job is finished, close the Status window.

Return to the Console Program and restart processes on the appliance.

Restoring backups

You can restore a backup to the original appliance (where the backup was taken) or to a newly-imaged appliance. If you are restoring a backup to a newly-imaged appliance, start with Preparing a new appliance. Otherwise, skip to Restoring a backup.

CAUTION: Never restore a backup of one appliance onto another in-service appliance in your environment. The Foglight data that is restored on that appliance would be out of sync with the Archiver database associated with the appliance.

Preparing a new appliance

To prepare a new appliance:

If the new appliance does not have the Management Server, see Foglight APM on Dell™ PowerEdge™ R730 Appliance Imaging Field Guide.

Install the new appliance in your network and configure it as described in the Foglight APM Installation and Setup Guide.

NOTE: The appliance IP address and host name can be anything, that is, they do not have to be the same as the appliance where the backup was taken.

Enable the NetVault client on the new appliance as described in Enabling an appliance’s NetVault client.

Do one of the following:
•
If the new appliance has a different IP address and host name than the original appliance, register the new appliance on the NetVault server as described in Registering an appliance in NetVault.
•
If the new appliance has the same IP address and host name as the original appliance, ensure that you can connect to it from NetVault. In the NVBU Client Management window, click the appliance’s icon in the Clients list and select Check Access.
You are now ready to restore a backup on the new appliance.

Restoring a backup

You start by preparing the target appliance for a NetVault™ restore from the appliance’s Console Program. As part of this process, Foglight is shut down. Next you restore the backup from NetVault. When the restore job is complete, you restart the appliance.

CAUTION: Following this procedure deletes any existing configuration settings and data under /opt/quest/foglight on the appliance, and replaces it with the restored file system and Database Repository.
To restore a backup:

Log in to the target appliance’s Console Program.

Select Advanced Options, and then More Advanced Options.

Select Prepare for NetVault Restore.

On the Prepare for NetVault Restore screen, select Yes to proceed with the operation.

Launch the NVBU Console on the NetVault server and complete the following steps:
a
Click Restore.
The NVBU Restore window opens.
b
Double-click the appliance icon.
c
Click File System, and double-click the backup that you just created.
d
Expand the branch and ensure /opt/quest/foglight is selected.
e
Click the Target Client tab, and select the target appliance.
f
In the Job Title box, specify a name for the restore job.
g
To run the restore job, click the Traffic Light icon.
A message confirms that the job was submitted successfully, and the restore begins.
h
Close the NVBU Restore window.

To monitor the status of the restore job, click Status and select the file system restore job. When the job is finished, close the Status window and exit NetVault.

Return to the Console Program, and do one of the following:
•
If the Console Program is still active, click OK to confirm an appliance restart.
•
If it timed out, log into the Console Program and select Shutdown to reboot the appliance.

After the appliance finishes restarting, exit the Console Program and log in to the Foglight browser interface to validate that the data has been restored.
The restore process is complete.
