Exchange and SQL Server logs are not reduced in size after a vRanger backup. This can result in the log disk becoming completely filled up. The freeze.bat file and vzshadow executable are properly installed. VMware Tools are either out of date or not installed.
VMware Tools is a necessary component for application-level quiescing. VMware Tools are not installed, application level quiescing is not possible. If they are not functioning or out of date, results are unpredictable.
If VMware Tools are completely broken, you will be unable to create a quiesced snapshot from the vSphere client. This is a valuable test and the error message the the vSphere client displays can be very useful when troubleshooting snapshot creation either from the vSphere client or from vRanger. If updating VMware Tools does not solve the problem or if the VMware Tools are current, it may be necessary to uninstall and reinstall the VMware Tools. This will require two reboots of the VM.
Another issue with creating a quiesced snapshot can be caused by the presence or the former presence of the BackupExec Remote Agent. The installation of the BackupExec Remote Agent causes the default VMware Tools VSS writer to be replaced with that provided by the BE Remote Agent. If this is the desired configuration, it will not be possible to create a quiesced snapshot with vRanger. If this is NOT the desired configuration, the the BE Remote Agent must be uninstalled, then VMware Tools must be uninstalled. After rebooting the VM, VMware Tools can be installed, which will reinstall the VMware Tools VSS writer. After rebooting, the snapshot quiescing should work properly.
