Backups fail randomly with the following error:
'Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding"
CAUSE #1:
Contention during jobs due to configuration of the backups/environment.
CAUSE #2:
There are too many jobs scheduled to start at the same time every day.
CAUSE #3
These jobs may also all backup to one single repository.
CAUSE #4
vRanger job configuration settings may be set too high for the environment in place creating contention issues which in turn lead to the above error message.
CAUSE #5
vRanger DB contains a lot of recent (completed within last 30 days) tasks.
Use script (https://www.quest.com/community/products/vranger/f/forum/11598/purge-db-t-sql-script) to purge recent tasks.
CAUSE #6
RESOLUTION #1:
Stagger jobs to reduce the amount of jobs running simultaneously.
RESOLUTION #2
Create extra repositories to spread the backup load more evenly across the environment and prevent the possiblity of a bottleneck being created at one single repository, especially in larger environments.
RESOLUTION #3:
Adjust vRanger job configuration settings (Tools | Options | My Jobs | Configuration) to reduce the amount of jobs permitted to run at once to a repository, or on a host etc. This adjustment of settings will be a trial and error process until the issue is resolved.
