Manually Deploy vRanger virtual appliance for vRanger 6.1
Description
Auto deploy of the vRanger VA is not working. Or you prefer to deploy the VA manually.
Cause
There can be a number of reason that can interfere with the auto deployment of the vRanger VA.
Resolution
Please follow these steps to manually deploy a vRanger virtual appliance(VA).
The vRanger 6.1 VA is now inluded with the vRanger 6.1 installation and is located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Quest Software\vRanger\Client and is named Quest_vRanger-Virtual-Appliance_190.ova. If there is no vSphere client installation on the vRanger machine please move this file to a machine that has vSphere client installed on it.
In the vSphere Client, clickFile, thenDeploy OVF Template.
Clickbrowseto provide the path for the downloaded vRanger ova and click Open, then clickNext.
Continue through the deployment process, selecting the appropriate host and datastore configuration.
If you do not use DRS in your environment proceed to step 6. If you do use DRS in your environment please disable DRS for the VA.
a. In your vSphere client, find the cluster containing the vRanger VA. b. Right-click on the cluster and select Edit Settings. c. In the Cluster Settings dialog, select Virtual Machine Options. d. Search or find the vRanger VA, right-click the VA and select Manual and click OK.
Power on the VA.
Install the VMware tools on the VA (this must be done within 5 minutes of powering on the VA)
a. From the vSphere Client right-click on the VA. Point to Guest, then click on Install/Upgrade VMware Tools. b. Log into the VA and at the prompt run the following command /root/bin/install_vmware_tools.sh and press enter. c. Restart the VM by typing reboot at the prompt.
If there is no DHCP that will provide an IP address to the VA or you would like for it to have a static IP please follow these steps otherwise proceed to step 10.
a.Login to the VA. b.Run the following command vi /etc/sysconfig/network-devices/ifconfig.eth0/ipv4. c.Edit the configuration file as needed with the following information:
ONBOOT=yes SERVICE=ipv4-static IP=<static IP of VA> GATEWAY=<IP of gateway> PREFIX=<this is the subnet mask - your values may differ> BROADCAST=<your broadcast IP- the highest IP in the VA’s subnet.>
d. Save the file. e. If you are changing the VA from DHCP to static IP, move the DHCP configuration file to the root directory. This will disable DHCP. If you are changing a static IP configuration, this step is not necessary, mv -v /etc/sysconfig/network-devices/ifconfig.eth0/dhcpcd /root/. f. Restart the VM by typing reboot at the prompt.
If a static IP was configured in step 8 then DNS may not have been configured for the VA, please follow these steps to configure DNS, if DNS is not needed proceed to step 10.
a. Login to the VA. b. Using the VI text editor, edit the resolv.conf file by running the following command vi /etc/resolv.conf. c. Enter the following text, substituting the appropriate values where indicated:
d. Save the file. e. Restart the VA by typing reboot at the prompt.
If the VA is being used for replication add the second disk to the VA via the vSphere Client and proceed to step 11, if the VA is not being used for replication proceed to step 16.Please look on page 82 In the vRanger 6.x Installation Guide for VA scratch disk sizing, to help you determine the size of the second disk that you need to create.
Transfer the attached vautil_02.00.01.tar.gz to the VA. (You can use WinSCP from a Windows machine to transfer the file to /root/bin)
Extract the utility scripts.
a. Login to the VA. b. Run the following command to extract the utility script, tar zxvf vautil_02.00.01.tar.gz.
You should still be logged into the VA and run the following command cd /root/bin/vautil_02.00.01.
Now run the script to configure the scratch disk by running the following command ./scratch_scsi.sh -a "0:0:1:0" -w 190 and press enter.
The results from running the script in step 11 will be ADDED: sdb this lets you know the scratch disk has been added correctly you can run the df command to confirm you have 3 disks.
Add the VA to vRanger.
a. In the vRanger click on Tools, click on Options, and click on Configuration under Virtual Appliance. b. Click the Add button and find the VA that you have just deployed and configured manually(You will need to refresh the inventory for vRanger to update the list of VMs in your environment).
Now you can create a new job or edit a current job to use the VA.
