Toad Data Point 5.3 - User Guide

Change Passwords for Intelligence Central Objects

If your Windows Authentication or other data source user account password changes, you may need to update the password in objects that were published from that data source to Intelligence Central. This can include objects you access in Intelligence Central, as well as objects you published yourself.

Use this guide to help you determine where you may need to update your password when it changes and how to accomplish this for the various object types in Intelligence Central.

The following are objects in Intelligence Central where your password might be used and where you might need to update your password if it changes.

  • A view—If you access a view using your Private key, or if you published a view (using a Private or Public key).
  • A snapshot— If you refresh a snapshot using your Private key, or if you published a snapshot (using a Private or Public key).
  • An Automation script—If you run a script in Intelligence Central, or if you published and then run a script that uses a data source connection.
    1. You might need to update the password for the "Run As" account which is used to run the script on the Intelligence Central server.
    2. You might need to update the connection password in the script.
  • A Toad document published to Intelligence Central—If you published a Toad document containing a data source connection.

Windows Authentication

Windows Authentication is sometimes used to provide user account credentials to a data sources. Review the following to help determine where you might need to update your Windows Authentication password when it changes.

Toad allows you to use Windows Authentication to create a connection to the following data sources.

  • Intelligence Central connections
  • SQL Server connections

In addition, you might be connecting to other data sources that are pre-defined to use your Windows Authentication account.

You might also be using your Windows Authentication account to run scripts on Intelligence Central.

Change Connection Password in Toad

The first step is to update the password in the Toad connection when the password to the data source changes. Perform this step prior to attempting to change the password for a connection in an Automation script or Toad document published to Intelligence Central.

To change a connection password

  1. In the Connection/Navigation Manager, right-click the connection and select Properties.
  2. In the Connection dialog, enter your new password. Click Save.
  3. Repeat this process for other connections that use the same user account and password.

Change Password in Various Objects

Views and Snapshots in Intelligence Central

Each time you publish a view or snapshot to Intelligence Central from a remote data source, an Authentication key is created. This key stores the login information to the remote data source. For objects you publish, this information is automatically gathered from your Toad connection during publishing. For objects others publish with a Private key, you provide your own login information the first time you access the object.

If your password to a remote data source changes, you must also change this password in your Authentication key/keys. You must do this for each object published from this data source that has a Private key applied. For objects with a Shared key, the Authentication key can be updated once by the owner.

For more information about Authentication keys, see User Authentication in Intelligence Central.

Tip: If you attempt to access a view or refresh a snapshot and you encounter an "invalid password" or "logon denied" error from the data source (such as an ORA-01017 error from an Oracle database), this may indicate that you need to update the password in your Authentication key for that object.

To change the password for views and snapshots

  1. In the Object Explorer, right-click the view or snapshot and select Operations | Set/Change Authentication or click .
  2. In the Alter Authentication dialog, enter the new password.
  3. For views with a personal key applied, select Apply this to other view objects in the same datasource that need authentication.
  4. For objects with a Shared key applied, repeat this process for each view or snapshot published from the same remote data source.

See Alter Authentication for more information.

Automation Scripts Executing on Intelligence Central

If you publish a script that uses a connection to a remote data source and then run the script on the Intelligence Central server, when your password to that remote data source changes you must update the connection information in the script.

In addition, each Automation script executing on Intelligence Central runs under a specified user account. If scripts are currently running on Intelligence Central under your Windows Authentication account, you must update the account information when your password changes.

To change the password for a connection in a script

  1. First, update the password for your connection in Toad. See Change Connection Password in Toad.
  2. Then, in the Object Explorer or Script Manager, right-click the script and select Operations | Edit Script.
  3. When the script opens in an Automation window, click Test in the Wizard bar. Opening the script for edit in Toad updates the connection information.
  4. Click Republish to republish the script back to the same Intelligence Central server. For more information about editing scripts, see Edit or Copy Automation Scripts on Intelligence Central.

Toad Documents in Intelligence Central

Toad documents, such as Query Builder files, can contain one or more connections. If you published a Toad document containing a connection and you want to update the password, you can do so by editing the document using the Get File command.

Query Builder files and other Toad documents (except Automation scripts) shared through Intelligence Central must be executed in Toad Data Point. Therefore, entering credentials or modifying the connection in the document is a fundamental part of the Get File process.
