Viewing event logs

You can view the event log messages from the View Events page.

To view event logs:

In the Navigation pane, click View Events.

On the View Events page, you can view the following information:
•
Date: Date and time when the event was raised
•
Class: Event class
•
Event: Event type
•
Message: Detailed log message or description

By default, the table is sorted by Date (newest to oldest).
You can sort the table by one or more columns, as required. For more information, see Sorting records in NetVault Backup WebUI.
To set the filter options (For more information on table filter options for View Events page, see Table 9), view the page size setting, column sort order, applied filters in the table, export the records, or edit table settings, click the icons at the lower- right corner of the table.

You can use the Search option to filter the table data and quickly find entries that contain the specified string in any column values. You can also include wildcards (“?” or “*”) in the search filter string. Type the search text into the box and click the tick icon or press Enter.

The View Events page loads a maximum of 10,000 records initially. The total number of records fetched is displayed at the lower-right corner of the table. You can click Load more to load the next set of records, if available. Each load action fetches a maximum of 10,000 records. This button is disabled if there are no more records to load.

To stop or resume live updates, click the Pause or Resume Live Updates button.

To perform a logs-related task, click the corresponding button in the Operations pane. Alternatively, click a link in the Navigation pane to open a different page.

About global notification methods

Global notification methods provide different mechanisms for sending notifications when an event occurs.

The available methods include the following:

•
Sysop Email: Use this method to send an email notification to the Administrator when an event occurs.
•
Print Report: Use this method to print a report after it is successfully generated from the View Reports page. This method can only be used for Report Job events.
•
Run a Job: Use this method to run a job when an event occurs.
•
SNMP Trap: Use this method to send SNMP traps (notification) to a network manager host when an event occurs.
The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) provides a method to monitor and control the network devices on TCP/IP-based networks. An SNMP trap is a notification (message) sent from a managed device to the network management host when a significant event occurs. The event does not have to be an outage, a fault, or a security violation. The SNMP Trap method allows the administrator to monitor the NetVault Backup events from an SNMP-based network management interface as a part of the network management operations.

Setting up a global notification method

To set up a global notification method:

In the Navigation pane, click Configure Notifications.

On the Editing Global Notification Profile page, open the event class, and then open the event type that you want to be notified about.

Configure the notification method that you want to use. You can configure multiple notification methods for a single event.

Notification method
Description

Sysop Email

Select this method to send an email notification to the Administrator (Sysop) when the event occurs.

Before you can use this method for sending notifications, you must complete the following tasks:

•
Configure the Outgoing Email Server (SMTP) settings. For more information, see Configuring email server settings for notifications.
•
Configure SysOp email address. For more information, see the Configuring SysOp email ID for notifications.

Print Report

Select this method to print a report after it is successfully generated from the View Reports page. This method can only be used for Report Job events.

On Linux-based NetVault Backup Servers, no additional configuration is required to use this method. The printer set up as the default printer for the system is used to print the report.

On Windows-based machines, you must do one of the following:

•
Configure a default printer in NetVault Backup. For more information, see Configuring a default printer for notifications.
The Print Report method uses this printer for all events.
•
Alternatively, set the NVPRINTER variable in the Extra environment variables box:
NVPRINTER=<Printer URL>
The Print Report method uses this printer for an individual event. You can use the NVPRINTER variable to override the default printer setting for an individual event.

Run a Job

Select this method to run a NetVault Backup job when the event occurs.

To use this method, you must do the following:

•
Create the job that you want to run when the event occurs
•
Set the JOBID variable in the Extra environment variables box:
JOBID=<Job ID number of the job that you want to run>

SNMP Trap

Select this method to send SNMP traps (notification) to a network manager host when the event occurs.

Before you can use this method for sending notifications, you must complete the following configuration tasks:

•
Copy the file nvnotifications.mib to the “.mib” files directory on the host system running the network management software.
The “.mib” (Management Information Base) file describes the format of SNMP Traps that NetVault Backup sends. You can find nvnotifications.mib in the etc directory under the NetVault Backup installation directory. For more information about the location of the “.mib” files on the host, see the relevant network management software documentation.
•
Configure the network manager host settings from the Change Settings page. For more information, see Configuring network manager host settings for notifications.

Click Save to save the global notification profile.
