Setting up appliances

For each appliance, you need to log in to the appliance’s Console Program to specify user account settings, set the date and time, and define network settings. The general process is the same for both physical and virtual appliances.

TIP: If you have multiple appliances in your installation, consider setting up the Management Server appliance first, followed by the Archivers, and then the Sniffers. The advantage to this approach is that, with the Management Server running, you can register and test each Archiver and Sniffer as you set them up. And if you set up the Archivers before the Sniffers, when the Sniffers come online, the Archivers immediately begin storing the data captured by the Sniffers.

Logging in to the Console Program

In addition to initial setup tasks, the Console Program lets you perform a variety of maintenance tasks. For more information, see Maintaining appliances.

To log in to the Console Program:

Access the appliance as described in one of the following procedures:
•
For physical appliances, you can either launch the Console Program while you have a monitor and keyboard attached to the appliance itself, or you can access the appliance remotely using the DRAC browser interface, as described in Launching the Console Program remotely with DRAC.

For virtual appliances, see Powering on virtual appliances.

At the login prompt, enter the following credentials:
•
Login (user name): setup
•
Password: setup
The Console Program Main Menu appears.

NOTE: To select a menu item, highlight the menu item (see the on instructions), ensure OK is highlighted, and press Enter. To move between options, such as the OK and Back options, press the Tab key.

Enabling SSH and changing the default password

For security purposes, you should change the vendor’s default password for the default setup user account. Alternatively, you can add a new user and then delete the default user. For more information, see Adding new user accounts.

This procedure enables SSH for the setup user, which enables remote access via an SSH client.

CAUTION: Make a note of the new setup password and keep it in a secure location. If you forget the password, it cannot be recovered or reset.
To enable SSH and change the user password:

From the main menu, select Console User Accounts.

Select Modify Console User.

Select setup.
The Modify Console User “setup” screen appears.

Select Enable/Disable SSH.
An error message states that the default password is not secure and prompts you to change it.

In the error message, select Yes.

In the Password screen, type a strong password and select OK.

In the Confirm Password screen, repeat the password and select OK.

When a message confirms that the password has been changed, select OK.

When prompted to enable SSH access, select Yes.

In the SSH Configuration screen, select OK.
You return to the Modify Console User “setup”.

Select Back until you return to the Console Program Main Menu.

Setting the date and time

You set the date and time by selecting a time zone. If the date or time associated with the time zone are inaccurate for your location, you can change them.

When using physical appliances, you also need to specify an NTP server. Virtual appliances, however, synchronize with the host's clock using the VMware® Tools “Synchronize guest time with host” feature, which is enabled by default the virtual appliances. You may want to open the vSphere® client on the host and verify that the NTP settings are correct.

TIP: You can use the Tab key to navigate among the lists and options in the Timezone screen, or you can hold Alt and press the key corresponding to the bold letter in the option name.
To select your time zone:

From the main menu, select Date & Time.

Select Change Date, Time, and Timezone.

In the Clock and Time Zone screen:
a
From the Region list, select a region.
The Time Zone list changes based on the selected region.

From Time Zone list, select a time zone, country, or region.

To use UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), select Hardware Clock Set To UTC. Clear this option to use local time.

If the time or date of the time zone are incorrect:
a
In the Data and Time box, select Change.

Select Manually.

Set the time and/or date.

Select Accept.

Select OK.
The settings are saved, and you return to the Date & Time.

Physical Appliances Only—specify an NTP server.

Select Change NTP Settings.

Type the IP address of your NTP server, and select OK.

Select Back until you return to the main menu.
