Specifying network settings

For this step, you need the network information you collected when planning your installation, including IP addresses, host name, subnets, and DNS servers. For more information, see the tables in Network information required for physical appliances or Network information for virtual appliances.

When specifying IP addresses, you can use either IPv4 or IPv6 addresses. When specifying a subnet mask, you can use whichever notation you prefer, that is, either CIDR notation (as shown in the following image) or IP notation (for example, 255.255.255.0). The Console Program automatically converts IP notation to CIDR notation.


	NOTE: You may see an error for a DNS lookup on your hostname. You can safely ignore this error if the hostname has not been added to your DNS.

To specify network settings:

From the main menu, select Network Settings.

Type in the values you determined when planning your installation.

When prompted for confirmation, select Yes.

The Console Program tests your network settings. If the tests are successful, the Console Program can start services for Foglight.

Exiting the Console Program

Exit the Console Program by selecting Back until you return to the main menu, and then selecting Exit. Repeat the setup procedures on all the appliances in your installation.

If an appliance hosting a Management Server needs to participate in a federated environment, see Configuring Federated Children.

Launching Foglight

After you set up all the appliances in your installation using the preceding procedures, you should launch Foglight and ensure that the APM Appliances menu item appears in the list of Dashboards.


	NOTE: If you want to use the Foglight APM Host Name to launch the browser interface, ensure that the host name is mapped to the IP address of the appliance in your Domain Name Server (DNS), and then specify the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) in the navigation bar, such as http://foglight.mycompany.com:8080.

To log in to Foglight and locate the APM Appliances menu:

Select Exit to log out of the Console Program.

Launch Foglight from the browser of your choice. In the navigation bar, type the Foglight APM Control Port IP Address or Host Name followed by :8080.

For example: http://<Foglight APM Control Port IP Address>:8080

Log in to Foglight using the user credentials provided by your Foglight Administrator. In a new Foglight installation, the default user name is foglight and the password is foglight.

In the navigation panel, under Dashboards, verify that the APM menu item has been created.

The installation and setup of the appliances is complete. The next step is to register and configure Sniffers and Archivers.

Configuring software components

From Foglight, someone with APM Administrator user privileges needs to register Sniffers and Archivers, and configure the software components to enable data capture of live web traffic. The instructions are in the online help. This procedure shows you how to find the instructions.


	NOTE: For an All-in-One Appliance only, a Sniffer and Archiver come preregistered as the LocalSniffer and LocalArchiver.

To open the online help:

Open the Foglight action panel (right-hand drawer) by clicking the arrowhead.

In the action panel, click the Help tab.

Expand Using Foglight APM > Foglight APM Administration and Configuration Guide.

Click Getting Started.

The help window opens. Follow the steps to complete the configuration.
