Diagnostics Drilldown

Note: This feature is available only in Spotlight on SQL Server Enterprise.

Use the Diagnostics drilldown when conducting exploratory exercises into high CPU usage or I/O consumption on your monitored server, and to answer questions such as:

  • Why is CPU usage higher than usual?
  • Is SQL Server causing high CPU usage?
  • If it is SQL Server, is it optimizing queries or executing them?
  • Why is I/O wait time higher than usual?
  • What is causing high I/O wait times?

You can also diagnose CPU and I/O pressure from current and historical alarms.

To see the Diagnostics drilldown

  1. Select a SQL Server connection from the Spotlight browser.
  2. Click Monitor | Diagnostics.

Note: Data relating to Excessive Query Optimization and Query Execution is not available for SQL Server 2000. Top 25 Adhoc SQL Statements is additionally not available for SQL Server 2005.

Note: Data relating to Query Execution, Excessive Page_IO_Latch waits and Log waits is not available for SQL Server 2000.

To diagnose CPU or I/O pressure from an alarm

  1. Click Monitor | Alarm Log.

  2. Select one of the following alarms:

    • CPU - Average CPU Usage alarm.
    • I/O Wait Time alarm
  3. Click Diagnose.
