What does the Forest Edition require for name resolution? How does the product communicate if DNS is unavailable?
I tried to perform a forest recovery in my VM environment and it consistently failed on a single DC in the forest. I isolated the problem to the DNS server not being available. When performing a forest recovery DNS is required to find the target servers, to tell the agents to perform a restore of the DC's system state from backup. If DNS is not up and running, the recovery appears to fail.
Recovery Manager Forest Edition requires 'A' or 'CNAME' records for name resolution while contacting the agents on the DCs. The application does standard name to IP address resolution. The problem with the scenario above is that the only DNS server in the environment sits on one of the DCs being recovered. Therefore, the Forest Edition Console can't get to the agents. To avoid this problem, the DNS server should be available before starting the test/recovery and once the Console resolves the DC names they should be kept in the cache, which will allow the Console to contact the agents during the time the DNS server is absent.
