Title
Backups are no longer working after upgrading the agent to 10.0 or higher. Unable to execute request (111) -
Description
After upgrading the backup agents to 10.0 from an earlier version your backups are no longer working on 2012R2, 2016 or 2019 servers.
You receive the following message:
"Unable to execute request (111). Unable to gather Volume Shadow Copy Service information. The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect." -
Cause
This can be caused by an incorrect registry setting in servers using certain versions of VMWare tools.
The agent now enumerates the files before backing up, and will throw this error if a file path is invalid.
The registry setting is set by VMWare tools on install, and can be fixed by either manually editing the value, or upgrading VMWare tools.

Resolution
There are three ways to resolve this issue, ordered in preference
1. Upgrade VMWare tools to version 10.2.0 or higher.2. Edit the registry key causing this issue: “HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vsock\ImagePath”
The entry will look like “\SystemRoot\system32\drivers\vsock.sys” in affected versions.
This causes issues because SystemRoot expands to an invalid path.
Remove the SystemRoot, and leave the value as "\system32\drivers\vsock.sys".3. Disable the "Boot Files" component under the "System State" tab under the "Collection Properties" for affected collections.
