Auto configure of VSS tools does not work and it is required to configure the VSS tools manually.
This issue can exist in a very secure environments where the environment is locked down and UAC(User Access Control) is being used.
Please follow these steps to manually configure VSS tools for Windows 2008 and newer on vRanger 6.x
1. On the VM that you want to backup create the following directory quest\vzShadow in C:\Program Files\
2. From the following directory from the vRanger machine C:\Program Files (x86)\Quest Software\vRanger\Client\VSS or C:\Program Files\Quest Software\vRanger\Client\VSS move the following files msvcp100_x64.dll, msvcr100_x64.dll, and vzshadow_x64.exe to the newly created directory on the machine that you want to backup C:\Program Files\quest\vzShadow
3. Rename all the files by removing _x64 from the file names
4. On the VM that you want to backup create the following directory backupscripts.d in C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools\
5. Create a freeze.bat file in the newly created directory on the machine you want to backup C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools\backupscripts.d
6. For log truncation to occur please add the following text to the freeze.bat filer
echo off
if "%1" == "freeze" goto doFreeze
goto EOF
:doFreeze
"c:\program files\quest\vzShadow\vzshadow.exe" X:
:EOF
X equals all the drives that host the application, if there are multiple volumes on this VM, list all volumes, separated by colon space (: )
example ( "c:\program files\quest\vzShadow\vzshadow.exe" C: E: ) or ("c:\program files\quest\vzShadow\vzshadow.exe" -notl C: E:)
vRanger 7.x
1. On the VM that you want to backup create the following directory Dell\vzShadow in C:\Program Files\
2. From the following directory in the vRanger machine C:\Program Files\Dell\vRanger\VSS or move the following files msvcp100_x64.dll, msvcr100_x64.dll, and vzshadow_x64.exe to the newly created directory on the machine that you want to backup C:\Program Files\Dell\vzShadow
3. On the VM that you want to backup create the following directory backupscripts.d in C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools\
4. Create a freeze.bat file in the newly created directory on the machine you want to backup C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools\backupscripts.d
5. For log truncation to occur please add the following text to the freeze.bat filer
echo off
if "%1" == "freeze" goto doFreeze
goto EOF
:doFreeze
"c:\Program Files\Dell\vzShadow\vzshadow.exe" X:
:EOF
When using vRanger with Quest Recovery Manager for Exchange 5.1 (or later), use the text below to modify the freeze.bat batch file. This will create an XML file that RME uses to identify vRanger savepoints with Exchange databases.
• When vzShadow is being used to truncate logs: "c:\program files\quest\vzShadow\vzshadow.exe" -bc=x:\backup.xml X:
or
• When vzShadow will not be used to truncate logs: "c:\program files\quest\vzShadow\vzshadow.exe" -notl -bc=x:\backup.xml X:
Where X equals the drive(s) that hosts the Exchange Server -- if there are multiple volumes on this VM, list all volumes, separated by colon and a space (: ), as in:
• When vzShadow is being used to truncate logs: "c:\program files\quest\vzShadow\vzshadow.exe" -bc=x:\backup.xml c: d: e:
or
• When vzShadow will not be used to truncate logs: "c:\program files\quest\vzShadow\vzshadow.exe" -notl -bc=x:\backup.xml c: d: e:
