Description
Trying to backup the C: volume of a VM but when the snapshot is taken I get: API call failed - File is larger than the maximum size supported by data store

Cause
The snapshot is taken of the entire VM. Although you only want to backup the C: volume, when vRanger send the call for VMware to take the snapshot, it will take one of the entire VM. If there is not enough disk space on the data store you will see this error.

Resolution
One solution is to set the larger disk that you will not be backing up to Independent. These types of disks are not affected by snapshots. Meaning that when VMware takes a snapshot these disks will be omitted.
There are other solutions such as moving the VM to a larger data store, removing the large vmdk file from the VM, etc. Please note the other solutions in our knowledge base for this error.
