When performing Hot-Add backups with a vRanger Virtual Machine, random backups fail with error:
Error Message: 2654 - can't read vix:r:beudc1vcs01.ad.budgetemea.net:902:[VMFS_LUN3_1000] BEUDC1SVS01/BEUDC1SVS01.vmdk:moref=vm-8565:snapshot-14006:2 [at io_size:125]
On older SAN hardware (2GB fabric speed, 10K RPM Drives, and SATA based arrays) backups can fail with the above error if the SAN queues backup or the response time for I/O requests begins to LAG. When this I/O contention is encountered, backups can fail with attached error message.
Scenario: If I run 1 backup at a time, my success rate for all tasks is 100%. As soon as I attempt to run more than one task at a time, my failure rate increases with above error.
vRanger's concurrency settings need to be adjusted to cope with environmental factors in play.
In the vRanger Client, select Tools, then Options.
Select My Jobs, and Configuration
Ensure that tasks running locally is restricted to 1.
Execute backups. If all tasks are successfull, concurrency settings can be increased until failure is induced, and then reduced to aqquire stability.
