Details: When opening the vRanger application a box appears with the following error message: "An error has occurred getting Virtual Center items. Unable to connect to the remote server."
This error will occur if a proxy has been configured in Internet Explorer on the host that is running vRanger. The proxy interferes with communication between vRanger and the Virtual Center causing vRanger to fail.
The solution for this issue is to set up the host to bypass the proxy server. To configure this open Internet Explorer and click on Tools, then Internet options.
Select the Connections tab and click on LAN Settings.
There is a box labeled "Bypass proxy server for local addresses."
Check the box if you wish to enable this option.
There also is the option to set up exceptions.
Next to the proxy server address is a box labeled Advanced.
Click on it and the Proxy Settings dialog box will appear.
At the bottom of this box is a section labeled "Exceptions" and an option to enter addresses in the "Do not use proxy server for addresses beginning with:" box. Addresses entered here will be allowed to bypass the proxy server.
Wildcards can be used in the Exceptions area of the Proxy Settings dialog box.
Example any traffic from the 10.0.20 subnet will be allowed to bypass the proxy server using 10.0.20.* or *.domain.com
Exercise caution when using wildcards. For example, if you were to enter www.*.com into the exceptions area Internet Explorer would bypass the proxy for many web sites.
