Many customers, in an effort to maximize their hardware investment, want to install vRanger on the same server as VMware vCenter. Due to the wide variety of factors that may impact performance, this practice is not recommended as it may cause vRanger backups to fail.
When the backup process is initiated, vRanger will communicate with the vCenter server to perform certain tasks. This creates an opportunity for resource contention as both applications will compete for CPU cycles and memory. Contention is exacerbated when running SAN based backups / LAN Free, as this process runs locally on vRanger server.
vRanger Best Practices state that it is not recommended to install vRanger on the vCenter Server, and should be installed on a dedicated server. This can be found in the vRanger Installation Guide.
7.3.x 7.1.xAdditionally, VMware recommends the following:
"VMware recommends that vCenter Server be installed on a system that is dedicated to managing your Virtual Infrastucture environment. Having other applications installed on the same server can take up valuable system resources, and may drastically reduce performance and supportability."
