Description
A VA based Hot-Add or VA based LAN backup fails with the following error:
"Error Message: The vRanger virtual appliance connection failed; you must unmount any disks that were added to the vRanger virtual appliance before attempting another backup of this virtual machine"

Cause
At some point throughout the backup the VA was switched off.
What is also seen in the logs before the job finishes is the following log entry: "Backup failed: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond (IP Address):22"

Resolution
Ensure the VA is powered on.
If using hot-add make sure disks are unmounted from the VA that were attached during backup.
