Jobs fail with error message containing "VIXDISKLIB_FLAG_NONE' failed with VddkApiException: You do not have access rights to this file" (4041826)

Vddk Api Open Failed Exception: Operation 'Open' with connection = '953034712016' path = '[DataStore] vmname/disk0.vmdk' openFlags = 'VIXDISKLIB_FLAG_NONE' failed with VddkApiException: You do not have access rights to this file

This is known to be caused by 2 situations:

1. The specified account used for the export or the agent-less backup does not have access to the requested files. This could be due to lack of permissions or it could be related to the type of transport used.
2. When the API call is generated from the core to VMware virtual center and/or an ESXi host and the VMware resource with denies or rejects the request the VDDK error simply throws the error of 'You do not have access rights to this file'

The first cause that relates to transports. The RR core defaults to look and see if you have the ability to perform a 'hotadd' or 'Lan-Free SAN' backup with each and every agent-less backup or virtual export. If you do not have licensing for either of these, or there is an environmental component that is preventing this from happening (DNS, IPs) then the job will either fail over to doing an 'NBD' (LAN) transport, or fail saying 'You do not have access rights to this file'

The second relates to VMware itself, which is more often the case, and deals with versioning and/or virtual center resources. To validate you aren't affected by this due to your VMware environment:

• ESXi hosts have their builds up to date (you don't have to be on the latest VMware version, however keep your ESXi builds current)
• Virtual Center needs to be the recommended resource level (especially for RAM), not the minimum. Keep in mind that the recommended RAM is just for running virtual center, it doesn't factor in 3rd party access in that total (which is what RR would be)
• Validate the VMware management interface is on a separate virtual switch than the one used for VMware traffic, which is VMware Best Practice
• If you are using the Rapid Recovery core to backup the virtual center itself please read this KB: Backing up Virtual Center with Rapid Recovery.
• If the ESXi is returning NBD_ERR_INSUFFICIENT_RESOURCES error in ApprecoveryVP.log, the issue is with lack of resources in the ESXi host itself. vMotion the VM off to another host will resolve the issue.
