How to perform a Bare Metal Restore for a Linux machine (4035421)

This article will go through the basics on performing a BMR (Bare Metal Restore) of a Linux machine. 

For file level restore and volume level restore, please refer to the local_mount utility to perform these types of restores at How to Mount and Unmount Recovery Points for a Linux Machine

For a detailed list of prerequisites and more details on the Linux Live DVD and manual disk partitioning, please refer to the Rapid Recovery User Guide. 

1. Boot up the machine you wish to perform a BMR to, to the Linux Live DVD.
2. On the prompt, run the screen command.
3. On the Rapid Recovery Core, navigate to the Agent you wish to restore to. Go to the Recovery Point tab, and locate the Recovery Point that will be restored. 

4. From the rightmost column, click …; from the drop down list, select Restore.

5. A Restore Wizard Guide will pop up. Select the second option, "Recovery to any target machine using a boot CD".
   • Tick the checkbox for "I already have a boot CD running on the target machine"
   • Fill in IP an Authentication Key for the Boot CD. 
   • If the system is plugged to a network without DHCP, assign an IP to the boot CD manually. 
6. Select Next

7. Select the Volume Mapping. Default is set to Automatic.  If you wish to restore only some volumes, or map a certain volume to a certain disk, select Manual Disk Mapping.
8. Select Next to preview the Disk Mapping

9. To proceed with the restoration, select the checkbox "IMPORTANT! I understand that this operation will overwrite selected volumes with the data from the selected recovery point."
10. Select Finish to initiate the BMR restore. The progress can be monitored from the Rapid Recovery Cores Events tab.
11. Once the restore has completed on the Core, reboot the Boot cd by running  sudo reboot
12. Eject the boot cd when prompted.
