OEM System Conflict for Restores
Description

This article describes a conflict between OEM systems and the restore processes, which include dissimilar bare metal restore and virtual exports. OEM systems are purchased from vendors such as HP, Dell, and the like.
Cause

HP hardware running OEM licensed operating systems (OS) are licensed directly to the hardware. This is called a “Feature Byte.” The Feature Byte will prevent the OS from running on different hardware. There is a similar to feature with Dell purchases.
Resolution

Due to this conflict, Rapid Recovery is not able to perform Bare Metal Restores (BMRs) to dissimilar hardware or virtual exports with success. You will be presented with a STOP 0x0000007B BSOD error on boot up. Attempts to repair the boot partition or inject the correct storage drivers normally do not reach resolution.

Rapid Recovery is, however, able to restore data using live recovery or rollback and perform granular database restores; however, the OS is unrecoverable, as it will fail to boot on any system other than the original hardware.
