VMWARE tools cannot be updated in the K1000 and K2000 appliances in ESXi 6.5 -
Description
After upgrading the ESXi hypervisor to 6.5 the vmware client shows the VMWare Tools as outdated.
The server is unable to upgrade the vmware tools and if a virtual CD/DVD drive is mounted the iso files are missing.
This issue only affects virtual appliances, hosted by ESXi 6.5 or above. -
Cause
This is no KACE issue!
VMWARE decided not to make the vmware tools available in the hypervisor directly.

Resolution
In SMA v8.1 and SDA v6.0 KACE replaced VMWare Tools with Open VM Tools, so it is no longer necessary to take care of this issue manually. The Open VM Tools version is subsequently updated with each appliance upgrade.
For legacy versions of the SMA and SDA, it is possible to download the both iso packs from vmware here. A (free) vmware account is needed to do so.
After unzipping the both packs (VMWARE tools and packages for Linux and Windows and VMWARE tools packages for FreeBSD, Solaris and OSX) the iso files can be uploaded via the uploading tool (in ESXi Webclient: Host | Storage | Storage Browser) and the virtual DVD drives can be linked to that new iso file. For updating the K1000 and K2000 appliance the FREEBSD.iso is needed.
