Log reading aid for Notepad++ (4299308)

Log reading can sometimes include digging through thousands of text lines to locate the one important message or error. To attempt to reduce the amount of time spent locating the messages, a log reading user defined language for Notepad++ has been created.

This language will highlight certain keywords in certain colors to make reviewing logs slightly easier.

This language can be used on multiple different logs (agent and server) and these are just some examples:

• KAgent.log
• Kbox_log
• Update_log
• Konductor log
• Error log
• Konea and koneas logs
• Ams_rest_error log
• Klicensepinger_output
• Kpatchdownload_log
• Maillog
• Mainlog

The user defined language provided is known to work successfully; however, it has not been officially tested by our Quality Control. This is provided as a courtesy and is use at your own risk. Please test this language and refer to documentation from Notepad++ for any additional information on user defined languages.

Note: This language does not work well with some themes and should be used with the default Notepad++ theme. Using it with other themes may cause the backgroud to change color.

First it will be necessary to download and install Notepad++.

To add this language to Notepad++:

1. Download the .xml attachment in the attachments section at the bottom of this article
2. Open Notepad++
3. Choose Language | Define your language…
4. Click Import
5. Navigate to the saved file click Open
6. Click OK on the import successful message
7. Close the User Defined Language window
8. Exit and restart Notepad++

NOTE: Close Notepad++ and reopen it before moving on to the steps below.

To use the language:

1. Open a log for review in Notepad++
2. Choose Language | Scroll to bottom and choose KACE_Log_Reading
3. Repeat for any log desired
