The recommended method (best practice) for deploying JRE full-installations or updates is using the K1000 patch catalog. The patching mechanism offers the following advantages:
The publicly available .exe installer for JRE 8 will not install silently as a Managed Installation. The process detailed in this article explains how to setup an MI by extracting the MSI from the .exe installer and using custom parameters to allow silent install as SYSTEM.
Oracle made changes to their installation methodology in JRE 8u20, detailed at https://www.java.com/en/download/help/msi_install.xml.
As mentioned above, the best practice approach for deploying JRE updates is by way of the Security Patching module.
The following alternative approach is provided as-is, and is not guaranteed to work with any specific version of JRE.
To extract the MSI from the publicly available .exe installer and configure a Managed Installation for a JRE update:
**In this example, we are using Java 8 Update 91.
Choose Override Default Installation and Dont Prepend msiexec.exe
Full command line (ensure the filename for the *.msi file matches the version appropriately):
*MSI log output will be available in c:\programdata\dell\kace\user\jre.log.
NOTE: Oracle has been known to adjust MSI parameters from time to time, so this exact set of parameters may not work with future JRE updates.
