Setting up server-hosted Management Servers

While the Foglight Management Server can be purchased on an appliance, many Foglight customers choose to add application performance monitoring and real end-user monitoring to their existing Foglight installation. You need to ensure that 256-bit encryption is enabled on the server running the Management Server and install the Foglight APM cartridge. You can add additional Management Servers as required to support a federated environment or a high availability cluster.

The following workflow describes adding Foglight APM to server-hosted Management Servers:

Server requirements

Ensure that your Foglight version and server meet the requirements listed in “Requirements for Server-hosted Foglight Management Servers” in the Foglight APM Release Notes.

In particular, verify the following requirements:

openssl is installed.
For Windows® servers, the network setting Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP is selected. For instructions, see Disabling the NetBIOS over TCP/IP setting.

Downloading and installing 256-bit encryption files

Foglight APM uses secure authenticated communications between the Management Server and the APM appliances (Archivers and Sniffers). Foglight APM requires that the local_policy.jar and US_export_policy.jar files located on the server are the versions distributed with Java Cryptography Extension (JCE) Unlimited Strength Jurisdiction Policy Files 6.

3
Navigate to <JAVA_HOME>/jre/lib/security.
4
Back up the existing local_policy.jar and US_export_policy.jar files.
5
Extract the new local_policy.jar and US_export_policy.jar files from the Oracle JCE ZIP file, and place these files in the <JAVA_HOME>/jre/lib/security directory.

Disabling the NetBIOS over TCP/IP setting

When enabled, the NetBIOS over TCP/IP setting may cause delays when Windows® negotiates SSL communications with the Linux® operating system embedded on the appliances. A symptom of this problem is slow performance on the APM dashboards, but not on the other Foglight dashboards.

The following procedure documents one way to access the NetBIOS settings. The steps on your Windows® operating system version may be different.

1
In Control Panel, click Network and Internet, and then click Network Connections.
2
Right-click Local Area Network, and then click Properties.
3
On the Networking tab, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Properties.
4
Click Advanced.
5
Click the WINS tab.
6
Click Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
