Anatomy of an appliance

The following figure identifies the ports and other elements on the rear panel of a Dell PowerEdge R730. If your appliance is a different model, identify the location of these ports and other elements on your appliance. Some appliances may have fewer or more monitoring ports. Foglight APM supports up to 10 monitoring NICs.

Planning an installation of physical appliances

Appliances gather data passively from the monitored network, without needing to change web applications or the web server configuration. To create this type of passive data collection network, you need to make some changes to the existing network.

For more details, see the following topics:

Public network switch

In a multiple appliance installation, you connect the appliances to your network using a public network switch. These connections enable communications and access as follows:

The total number of ports required depends on the number of appliances in your installation. For each appliance in your installation, you need two ports: one for the control port and one for the DRAC port.

Private network switch for the capture subnet

If your installation includes more than one Sniffer or more than one Archiver, you need to connect the auxiliary port on each appliance to a private switch. This creates a separate capture subnet to ensure that the data flow for captured data is isolated and does not affect the rest of the network.

In a distributed monitoring solution, where you want some web traffic monitored and stored separately from other data (for example, a standalone website), you could create a separate capture subnet for those appliances to reduce traffic on the main capture subnet. However, a more flexible way to handle this scenario is to create one capture subnet and have the APM Administrator define capture groups from the Foglight browser interface.
